How to Dress for Ladies Day at the Races

I can't believe that tomorrow is the 1st of March.  The year is flying by, Spring is fast approaching and before we know it, it will be time for the big race meets of the year and you know what that means- Ladies Day.

I absolutely LOVE going to Ladies Day, it's one of my favourite events in my social calendar.  It is a time for dressing to impress and going out with the girls, sipping on champagne and Pimms and having the odd flutter on the gee-gees.  You might remember my post and vlog last year which was all about my VIP experience at Aintree Ladies Day.  It was such an amazing experience, glittered with so many beautiful people all glammed up and ready for a good time.  I remember spending ages planning my outfit and I felt gorgeous in the dress and accessories that I had chosen.  This year, Ladbrokes have asked me to put together an outfit ready for Ladies Day and I can't wait to share my outfit with you all to give you a bit of inspiration.

Short Beaded Prom Dress in turquoise from Simply Be
Gold Peep Toe Court Shoe from Carvela at Debenhams
Hat Box Gold Ruffled Fascinator from Debenhams
Lulu Guinness Perspex Lips Clutch from John Lewis
Melissa Obadash Crystal Set Oval Link Bracelet and Triple Drop Earrings from John Lewis

Preparation is key when planning for an event like Ladies Day.  Don't leave shopping for your dress until the last minute as panic buying will leave you feeling stressed.  It is an exciting experience that is to be enjoyed, so don't waste it worrying.  If I were off to Ladies Day soon, I'd wear this gorgeous beaded prom dress from Simply Be.  The cut is so pretty and feminine, the embellishments add a bit of glam and the turquoise colour is simply stunning for the spring and summer.  I would leave the turquoise shade of the dress to do the talking and pair it with gold accessories.  Ladies Day is as much about the head wear as it is the dress.  I love this ruffled fascinator from Debenhams- its a great option for those who aren't daring enough to wear one of the oversized pieces that are often seen at Ladies Day.  Keeping with the gold theme, these gold peep toe heels look pretty comfortable whilst remaining stylish, which is pretty important on such a fashion concious occasion as there is a lot of standing on your feet at Ladies Day.  For accessories, I'd skip a necklace as the top of the dress is embellished and instead, I'd wear these gold earrings and a bracelet from Melissa Obadash for a little bit of sparkle.  Oh and I would be carrying all of my Ladies Day essentials- race card, mobile, purse and lippy, in this gorgeous Lip shaped clutch from Lulu Guinness.  Simply perfect!

I hope this outfit gave you some inspiration, whether you're off to Ladies Day or going to another event like a wedding, this outfit would be perfect.

What would you wear to Ladies Day?

WhatLauraWore: Pastel Blazer

I always remember those gorgeous pastel coloured blazers that everyone was wearing last summer from Primark.  I absolutely loved the look of them as they were perfect for the spring and summer but I wasn't able to find one in my size.  It looks as though the coloured blazer trend is set to stay for this summer too and I'm SO happy to have found that Simply Be have brought out their own gorgeous pastel blazers.  This is the Heavy Jersey Blazer Jacket from Simply Be.  I have it in the colour Apricot but it is also available in Menthol which is like a minty green and Black.  They're such good quality and an absolute steal for the price.  The jacket is light weight but still keeps you warm so it is perfect for the spring.  The ponte roma material is soft to the touch and creates a smooth line to an otherwise structured style of jacket.  It fastens with two pearlised dome buttons that look so girly and it is lined with a striped design which is great as it means it can be worn with the sleeves fully down or turned back, showing off the lining.  Whilst the weather is still cold here, I couldn't wait to wear it so popped it on with some jeans but I can't wait to wear it in the summer with linen trousers or over a cute short dress.

Heavy Jersey Blazer Jacket in Apricot from Simply Be
Nude spaghetti strap top from New Look
Dark indigo jeggings from Evans
Diamante bow flats from New Look
Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 bag in Damier Azure
Necklace from Roma at New Look
Pink feather earrings from International
Charm bracelet from Thomas Sabo
Rose gold watch from DKNY

The Weekend Edit #8: February Favourites

It's nearing the end of the month so I thought that it would be the perfect time to show you the products I've been loving this month.

The first product I've been loving this month is the Elasticizer from Philip Kingsley.  It's a pre shampoo hair treatment that restores the hair, making it feel amazing.  I did a full review of this hair mask on my blog yesterday.

The Elasticizer is available from Feel Unique.

Next up is another mask but this time for the face.  The Good Things Five Minute Facial Mask is packed full of Good Things, funnily enough.  I apply this just before getting in the bath and after it has worked it's magic, my skin is left super soft and ready to face the day.  I've done a full review of this mask here.

You can read all about Good Things on their website and their products are available to buy from BootsSuperdrug and Sainsburys.

This month, I've put together a make up bag of older products that I'm trying to use up but one new piece managed to sneak in there.  The Illusion D'Ombre in Emerveille from Chanel makes the perfect rose gold eye shadow base and looks gorgeous even just as a wash of colour over the lid with some winged black eye liner and lashings of mascara.  The colour is so beautiful, it reminds me of a cream version of MAC's All That Glitters.  It is available online and from all Chanel counters, like those in Debenhams and House of Fraser.

The fragrance I've been wearing this month is this eau de parfum from Orla Kiely.  It's a gorgeous feminine fragrance that has one of my favourite base notes- musk.  I did a full review of this perfume as part of one of my Christmas Gift Guides here.

This perfume came as part of an Orla Kiely gift set and is available online from the Orla Kiely website and also from big department stores like DebenhamsHeals, Fenwicks, other independent stores and giftshops.

Finally, I've got the photo shoot for my Simply Be dress coming up so I've been working hard to make sure my body is in the best condition possible.  I've been focusing really hard on my skin and I've found two products that have really been helping me with this.  They are both by a brand called Etat Pur that is available direct from their website.

The product on the left is the B60 Firming Reshaping Body Care body milk (£14.70 for 150ml).  It has a light, fresh fragrance and it is light in texture too.  It's an absolute joy to use as it quickly sinks into the skin leaving it feeling soft without being tacky or sticky.  I have been applying this morning and night to my whole body, really working it into my particularly wobbly areas and I've found that when combined with the A90 on the right and with toning exercises at the gym three times per week, it's really helped to firm up my skin, making it look healthier and feel moisturised throughout the day.  The product on the right is the A90 Caffeine (£11.30) which is a targeted treatment for cellulite as it hits right at the fat cells under the skin which can cause the orange peel effect on even the slimmest girls skin.  You can read more about the science behind this product on the Etat Pur website here but with regards to the effect it has had on my skin, I've been loving using it before the B60.  I pump a generous amount into my palms and apply it in circular motions to my stomach and thighs, wait a few seconds for it to absorb into my skin and then I follow up with the Firming Reshaping Body Care milk.  I've been using this since the end of January and I'm really enjoying the results of firmer skin so far.  I'm going to continue using them until they're gone and if the results continue as they have done so far then I definitely think I'd repurchase the pair as they've really improved the appearance of my skin.

What were your favourites this month?

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Review

Regular readers may remember my recent Hair Mask Showdown post where I threw the newest hair mask in my stash into the mix and promised I'd put it through its paces and come back with a review for you all.  Well, here it is; my thoughts on the Philip Kingsley Elasticizer.

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Hair Mask Review Image

The Philip Kingsley Elasticizer is one of the most raved about products in the hair care world and the one that I've heard the most talked about from the Philip Kingsley brand.

The Elasticizer is a pre-shampoo treatment that was originally created for Audrey Hepburn who was looking for a hair treatment that would be super moisturising whilst repairing her hair and keeping it in great condition through the frequent colouring and styling her would go through on film sets.

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Hair Mask Review Image

For an intensive moisturising treatment, the Elasticizer has a surprisingly light texture and is free from any fragrance.  Being lightweight makes it easy to work through the hair as it needs to be applied when the hair is just damp (before shampooing) but it is thick enough to give you the placebo effect while you're applying it, as it feels as though it is working from the first application.

As a pre-shampoo treatment, I find that the longer I leave this on my hair the better the results so where possible, I apply it through my hair when it is slightly damp, pop on the plastic shower cap that comes with it and leave it on my hair overnight, washing it off in the shower the next morning before shampooing my hair.

If I don't have the time, I'll just apply it and leave it to work for the half an hour or so before I get in the bath, while its running.  It is really easy to wash out with warm water and I must say, the results are instant.  I've been using this once a week.

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Hair Mask Review Image

However I'm sorry to report that I really don't think that the Elasticizer lives up to its claims; I've heard that it is a fantastic hair mask with results that improve the condition of the hair but in all honesty, I don't find that it really does that much to my hair.  It does leave my hair a bit softer to the touch and a bit shinier but I can get that with a mask from the supermarket for a fraction of the price.  I do think it does work more effectively, the longer you leave the mask on before showering but I haven't always got the time for that.  I have a feeling that this would be better on girls who have far drier hair than I do or for damaged hair.

I bought mine from Feel Unique for the 150ml tub.  There's also a 75ml tube available if you're just wanting to try it, a 500ml if you love it or a 1000ml if you REALLY love it!

Have you tried the Elasticizer- what did you think of it? What is your favourite hair mask?

Beating the Jeans Blues

This post has been guest written by Charlotte Rivington who is a freelance writer that loves writing about beauty, fashion & luxury. Charlotte is a big fan of shopping and trying new products especially from her recent exploit of Start Acne store London.  Today, Charlotte is writing exclusively for WhatLauraLoves all about denim.

Beating the Jeans Blues

The term ‘fashion-forward’ rarely gets used to describe jeans. The most directional denim can be when it is exposed to light blue washes, distressed effects and, for the extremely daring amongst us, rips. But looking forward to Spring/Summer ‘13, a veritable rainbow breaks through the gloomy clouds of dark blue and black jeans.

Spinning the colour wheel is J Brand, the premium denim brand revered for jeans that fit so perfectly that they follow the contours of one’s body. Now J Brand is equally known as the go-to for on-trend denim that does not dismiss a flawless fit. J Brand’s recent collaboration with Christopher Kane testifies to the way in which the label injects style and creativity into jeans. Kane brings his acute eye for colour to J Brand, in a collection that showcases a dazzling array of vibrant neon brights.

Beating the jeans blues, however, should be done with caution. Pastel shades are not for the faint-hearted, to be styled simply with close-fitting light grey or white t-shirts. A safer option that does not compromise on brightening up your wardrobe is the J Brand 811 style in Indio Blue. This electrifying shade of blue is a colourful anchor to your warmier weather wardrobe, still sufficiently versatile to pair with a range of other colours, from gleaming white to clashing purples and pinks. For a subtler way to incorporate colour into your jeans portfolio, head over to LA-based Koral for their line in colourful rinses. Their red tint skinny fit jeans are indeed ‘fashion-forward’, whose rich tone brings neutrals to life.

For the ultimate in fashion-forward denim, Swedish label Acne reigns supreme. The foundations of the brand lie in denim. Jonny Johansson saw a space in the market for denim and constructed 100 pairs of unisex jeans. Soon generating a stream of press and snapped up by leading boutiques thereafter, Acne jeans are cult items. For Spring/Summer ’13, Acne prove their directional denim credentials once again with their degrade collection. The Stace Degrad denim jacket is a standout piece, whose dark blue rinse spills out beautifully into lighter blue and gleaming white. The jacket is a denim rinse retrospective, celebrating the most familiar jean rinses and in a stunning, innovative configuration.

WhatLauraWore: Couture Is Bliss

For today's post, the heart is back.  Once again, I'm wearing my snuggly AX Paris heart jumper that I got from Simply Be and I'm loving it!  Paired with some simply black leggings and flats, this outfit would be perfect for the cinema or for grabbing a coffee with a friend.  The bag I am carrying is one of my favourites from Juicy Couture.  The 'Couture Is Bliss' slogan is so cute.  I've had this bag for years and never get tired of it.  I picked it up on a Christmas time trip to Manchester where I spotted it in Harvey Nichols when I was about 17.  My daddy and I were there killing time before we went to see The Pogues and I spotted this bag and had to have it.  Juicy Couture bags are so well made.  I've used this one to death but I always pad it out and keep it in it's dust bag and it really has stood the test of time!

WhatLauraWore: A Zebra Never Changes Her Stripes

I think it would be fair to say that I love this jumper from AX Paris.  It's casual enough for a day time look like this one but it keeps life glam with the little sequins on the Zebra's stripes, cute.  I'm wearing it here with my dark indigo jeggings from Evans and I'm carrying one of my Louis', 'cos that's how I roll when I pop to the shops.

Blistex Moisture Max Review

Wearing Moisture Max

Today I thought I'd share with you one of my favourite lip balms, Moisture Max from Blistex.  I received this in my goodie bag at the Leeds Blogger Meet Up last summer and have only really got round to using it in the last few months.  I love this lip balm as it is so easy to use in the squeezable tube, particularly if you have long nails like I do.  The lip balm itself is thick, super soft and very moisturising.  It contains little soft melting Moisture Beads made up of Shea Butter and Aloe Vera that hydrate your lips even further on contact as the rounded applicator tip of the top helps to burst them onto the lips, giving them an intense hit of moisture. and leaving them feeling deliciously smooth.  It is perfect for use on cold winter days but can be used all year round.  I find that this is particularly effective when used at night as the last step in my skincare routine and I always wake up to super soft lips!

The Blistex Moisture Max lip balm is available from Boots for £2.49 for 10ml.  This has quickly become one of my favourite lip balms and if I didn't have so many lip products, I would repurchase it in a heart beat!

What is your favourite lip balm?  What other Blistex products do you think I should try?

The Price of Male Grooming

Never mind the ladies; men are getting involved in beauty in a big way.

You may not think it, but male grooming is on the increase. From tanning to leg waxing, perhaps the influence of shows like Geordie Shore and TOWIE, the lads are getting involved with looking good. And with the rise of male fashion and big celebs like Becks advertising razors and moisturisers, it’s no surprise that men are putting more into grooming. About time, right?
Countless cosmetic companies are jumping on the band wagon and putting more than just shaving cream out there on the market. According to Tesco, Nivea and Gillette dominate the top selling male grooming products with moisturisers and face washes, and sales of each has increased dramatically in the last year alone.

Got annoyed when your boyfriend used up your emergency spot-treatment stash? Well hide that expensive moisturiser, those lovely shampoos and every single bath bomb, because it’s about to get a lot worse.

If you thought male grooming went as far as shaving then think again. Leg waxing, hair dying, tanning; men are getting involved. But let’s be honest; lovely as they are, lads have never been exactly savvy when it comes to beauty treatments. So how are they faring?

It looks like men are tallying up a good few injuries thanks to their newfound keenness on looking fabulous. In fact, has reported a good few cases of men having a bit of a disaster during their trip to the beauty parlour.

According to the survey, 10% of body-conscious blokes suffer a hazardous mishap while getting those hairy legs waxed. Men who go for a bit of eyebrow waxing need to be wary of the 12% who admitted they’d got themselves hurt, and 13% of men changing their look with a haircut or dye job soon found that that new look was going to cost them.

Tanning looks like the main danger zone for our men. According to the survey, 16% of men opting for spray tanning managed to get an injury, and as much as 20% of male UV tanners followed suit.  When you compare that to the 5% of women who reported injuries from tanning beds, it’s clear that the lads have a lot to learn when it comes to topping up that tan safely.

Speaking on behalf of first4lawyers, spokesperson Chris Rodgers said: “Our advice to anyone thinking about treating themselves to a makeover - male or female - is to ensure that they choose a reputable salon so you can be confident that it meets all the necessary safety standards.”

Wise words indeed.

With men catching up to the girls, it’s time to look forward to a new era of manicured men. You better start expecting to see lads hanging out at your tanning salon or ghosting around Boots for moisturiser!

The Weekend Edit #7: Date Night Ready Nails

When you're going out on a date, whether it's for Valentines Day or to celebrate an Anniversary like I did last night, it's important to have tidy looking nails.  Well manicured nails adorned with chip free polish show that the wearer is well kept, pulled together and has put a lot of thought into their outfit, right down to their nails.

This week, three products have really stood out in my nail care routine and have allowed me to create gorgeously girly Valentines Day nails.  I'll show you my full manicure routine in a later post as for now, I want to tell you all about the products that have been rocking my world this week.

The first product is the Organic Manuka Honey Cuticle and Nail Solution from Dr. Organic at Holland and Barrett.

The Manuka Honey line from Dr. Organic never fails to impress me.  My Holland and Barrett points card regularly tots up the rewards through over use on this range.  The Cuticle and Nail Solution are no exception to this rule.  It's an intensive treatment that works hard to protect, condition, moisturise and nourish the nails and cuticles.  It contains manuka honey, pure honey, virgin olive oil, jojoba oil, vitamin e, tea tree oil, african coffee tree oil, cocoa butter, shea butter and sunflower oil, all of which are known for being great at nourishing the nails but many make this nail oil antibacterial too.  I keep this in my bag and apply it every day while I'm at my desk at work.  It dispenses through the nozzle as an almost oily gel like formula and when massaged into the nails and cuticles, my fingers are left feeling and looking visibly improved.  It really helps to eradicate dry, flaky, cracked nails and when used with a buffing block, it really promotes ridge free nails too.  They appear healthy, shiny, moisturised and in great condition- ready for painting!  As well as making your nails look AMAZING, it smells incredible too and the scent lingers on your nails throughout the day.

For date night nails, I've found a combination of two nail polishes have been working well for me this week.  Both are by Nails Inc from Debenhams and House of Fraser.  The polish on the right is China Town and the polish on the left is Princes Arcade.  I layer up two coats of China Town and one coat of Princes Arcade, the pink diamond shade from the Nail Jewellery line, and they really do make my nails looks sparkly, very feminine and perfect for a night with the one you love.  Both nail polishes have an average drying time and they took a good few days before they started to show any wear which I was really happy about.  I'd definitely recommend this combo girls.

And the result?  Date night ready nails.

What are your favourite polishes for date night nails?

WhatLauraWore: The Pussy Bow Blouse

The second instalment of the Plus Size Work Wear Challenge is all about wearing a pussy bow or a pencil skirt.  I opted to wear this purple pussy bow blouse from Evans as I don't have many skirts that would be suitable for work.  I've teamed it with some wide leg trousers from the same shop... Evans really are great for work wear.

WhatLauraWore & My Make Up: Fair Isle-ing Into Spring

Last Saturday I posted a quick snap of this outfit on Instagram and it  received a lovely warm welcome from those who follow me on there.  Now that all of my Valentines posts are out of the way I thought I'd post this outfit on here and let you know where I got everything from, as always.

The outfit centres around my new Reverse Fairisle Cardigan from Bonmarche. Bonmarche is a shop I would have usually classed as being for women who are a little older than me but I was really surprised by some of their items after passing by my local store a couple of weeks ago.  They have some great key pieces and their swimwear is gorgeous- I've got my eye on a black and leopard print swimsuit for my holiday this summer, needless to say, I'm surprised and impressed!  Plus they have a gorgeous animal print blazer that I've got to show you all next week but for now, lets take a look at the Reverse Fairisle Cardigan.  It's warm but light weight, making it perfect for spring.  It looks equally as good open as it does with the poppers done up, creating quite the preppy, classic look.  I'm wearing it with some jeggings, a simple white vest top and some white Flossys, making it an uber casual but pulled together look.  The bag I'm carrying is from Jane Norman and I love it with this outfit as it really pulls out the gorgeous blues in the cardigan.  I can't wait to wear them together in the summer with some white linen trousers.  Oh and the price? £20 what a bargain!

While I was getting ready to go out, I had some time to snap the make up products I was using so I thought I'd show you what I was wearing on my face too in this everyday makeup look.

WhatLauraWore: A Loada Leopard Print

I'm sure it goes without saying that I'm a bit of a fan of leopard print.  I think it looks great, particularly in the winter and especially when worn with black.  Here I am wearing a leopard print cardigan that I picked up from the Ebay seller Girl Talk Fashions.  Its super warm and cosy and gives a great pop of leopard print to an otherwise plain outfit.  I've paired it with some of my favourite animal print accessories.  This makes a great outfit for shopping or going to the cinema.

WhatLauraWore: Happy Valentines Day

For Valentines this year, I wanted to wear a little black dress.  Not the classic offering mind you, something a little different and I definitely found it in this Net Crochet Flower Dress from my favourite place to shop for dresses, AX Paris.

The top of the dress has a crotched flower design and the skirt is lined with a net overlay.  Very feminine and comfortable to wear but it is as girly as you would like to make it.  I wore it with quite tough accessories and peep toe wedge shoe boots but this would also look great with some delicate silver jewellery and some heels with a bow on... which would match the dress perfectly as it has an elasticated part that pulls the wearer in under the bust with a bow on at the front.

Peeptoe wedges from New Look
Rose gold watch from DKNY at Earnest & Jones
Bracelet from Debenhams
