New Hair | My Hooker and Young Wynyard Experience

Hooker & Young, Wynyard hair salon

There's nothing better than stepping out of a salon with a fresh new hair do that you can't wait to show off and that's exactly the feeling I got when I went along to the award winning Hooker and Young salon.

They have 5 luxury hair salons across the North East in trendy Jesmond, Gosforth, Ponteland, Darlington and picturesque Wynyard which was the salon that I visited on this occasion.

Aesthetically, the Hooker & Young salon in Wynyard is beautiful, understated and elegant with dark green and cream on the outside and huge windows that let lots of natural light into the salon.

Inside, the salon is spacious, light and airy with a comfortable seating area and plenty of salon chairs in front of huge mirrors.  Everything about the interior is luxe, clean and comfortable which is exactly what you want when going to a salon to have your hair done, after all, unless you're popping in for a fringe trim, you're going to be in there a while.

As I expected from looking at the large windows, the salon is not left in the dark and has a mix of bright white lights to further light the salon.  This may seem like a strange point to pick up on, but if you've ever had your hair coloured in a dark, dingy salon and walked out into the natural light to find your hair is a completely different shade to what you expected it to be then you'll know why I feel that its important to mention.

Hooker & Young, Wynyard hair salon

The salon is located on the Wynyard estate that is very easily accessible from the A19 and A1 and there is ample parking outside of the salon.  I found it to be very easy to find and a pleasant 40 minute drive from where I live.  That may sound like a lot but by the time I drive to town to go to my usual salon, find a parking space and walk over to the salon, it has taken me far longer!

A good salon is worth finding and driving to; Hooker & Young even have people travelling for 3 hours to have their hair done at their salon!

Walking into the Hooker & Young Wynyard salon, you'll spot some of their favourite hair care products from high end brands that they use on your hair and that you can purchase if you would like to.

Luxury brands that are high performing and can be relied upon to work from the likes of KerastaseNioxin and Oribe.  The latter of which impressed me greatly as I haven't seen another salon in the North East stock or use their products and I've visited quite a number!

Hooker & Young, Wynyard hair salon

It might be a funny thing to mention but when I got there, I nipped to the loo and was surprised to even find luxury toiletries in there to freshen up with; White Geranium Hand & Body Cleanser and the Hand & Body Balm in the same fragrance from The White Company as well as having a bottle of YSL L'HommeAcqua Di Gioia by Giorgio Armani and YSL Opium on hand to spritz yourself beautiful with.

Its the little things that really make a salon stand out and Hooker & Young have left no stone unturned, they've literally thought of everything!

After freshening up, I was taken over to my chair and given a gown to pop on to protect my clothes and we took some before shots of my hair.

The first thing that stands out is that it is in massive need of a cut.  So I'll start off by telling you a little bit about my hair and how it came to be in the above pictures.

Hooker & Young, Wynyard hair salon

Naturally, my hair is pretty light and it has a lot of gold tones in it which I hate.  For years I had highlights put in my hair with a toner on it to give my hair more of an ash blonde look, alongside lowlights in a dark blonde/light brown colour in again, an ash tone.  I had a lot more lowlights in my hair compared to highlights, usually three packs of lowlight to one highlight.  However my hair is very porous and it also bleaches up quite dramatically in the sunlight.

Last year I was lucky enough to go on lots of abroad holidays and by the time I had my last one in September, the sun had lightened my hair so much, I was a very very bright light blonde.  Although it actually looked really pretty, I found that my roots that would usually look relatively light, looked incredibly dark when they were coming through against the sun lightened hair and so I decided that it was time for a change.

I had a very dark blonde/light brown colour (around a shade 6-7) painted on at my roots and then pulled through the lengths of my hair with the hands to give me an outgrown effect.  I really loved it when I first had it done and it didn't take a lot of getting used to considering I'd never had my hair coloured before but after a few months of having darker hair, I decided that I wanted to be brightened up a little.  I felt as though the darker colour made me look older and it was kicking out a lot of warm, golden tones.  Plus where my roots had started to come through, if I stood under a spot light they appeared to be quite light compared to the rest of my hair.

Also during this time, in November and December, I was wearing S Locks mini lock Hair Extensions in my hair.  So you can imagine that by the time I got to Hooker & Young, I was in desperate need of a good hair cut as well as my hair brightening up with some bleach, some new products designed specifically for my hair type and a routine to use them in.

Before having my hair done at Hooker & Young, Wynyard
After my photos, I was introduced to Stewart who has been named as one of the Rising Stars at Hooker & Young, a top stylist who is showing so much promise in his field.  Despite only being 21, he's worked there for the last 5 years and knows the salon and his technique like the back of his hand.

Stewart began with a very thorough consultation, I talked him through my hair, very similar to what I've said above and he really listened to what I was saying and what I wanted rather than ignoring me and just telling me what I should have like they do in some salons.

I'd explained that although my hair needed cutting, I wanted to keep as much of the length as possible as I was wanting to grow it.  I also told him about how I wanted my hair to look lighter and brighter, taking away that darker colour that I'd had in my hair previously.  I brought along my clip in hair extensions (latte blonde from Foxy Locks) to give him an idea of the colour I wanted to achieve and so that he knew how important it was for me that they still blended in so that I could wear them after having my hair done.

As Stewart had listened intently and asked the right questions, he was able to understand exactly the look I was wanting to go for and made some really good suggestions throughout.

Hooker & Young, Wynyard hair salon

We agreed on giving my hair a lighter look by giving me a full head of highlights.  Stewart said that my natural colour was quite light at around a shade 9 and so he would weave the highlights all over and leave them to lift up to the desired colour before toning my hair, rather than lifting the hair so far and then putting a toner on to finish off the job.  He said that this would ensure that I'd get the brightness and lightness that I want and that it would last, so I was very happy to take his advice.

During my consultation, we discussed the cut, how much I wanted to have chopped off and the style, as well as what I wanted to be done with my fringe.  Stewart picked up on the fact that I hate how thin my hair is and so he suggested adding some layers to my hair.  Until the last year, I used to have lots of layers in my hair but I started growing my hair out around the time of my wedding.  I felt really happy to have some layers put back into my hair to give it some texture and shape and when Stewart said he'd cut them blunt to make my hair appear thicker, I knew I was onto a good thing.

What I loved about the consultation was that we discussed the colour, cut and styling, including blow dry techniques and styling products, all together so that I knew how my hair would sit and what the colours would look like in my hair before any bleach was put onto my hair.  Having an idea of the parting, cut and style that a client is going for is essential for a stylist to know before adding highlights or colour to the hair so that they can apply it in the right way but so many hair dressers are not thorough enough when consulting clients, meaning that many people end up with a style that doesn't correlate well with the colour in their hair.  As Stewart had covered everything before even mixing the bleach, I knew that I was in safe hands.

I felt reassured and very confident in knowing what I would be getting done to my hair.  There's nothing worse than sitting in a hair dressers chair for a few hours in complete fear of what your hair is going to end up looking like... unless you like that thrill of course.

Hooker & Young, Wynyard hair salon

After my consultation, it was time to mix up the bleach (40 vol if I remember rightly) and apply it to my hair.  We'd discussed putting my hair into a centre parting and giving me a big sweeping fringe, very Victoria's Secret model looking (hair, not the body of course), and the bleach was applied to my hair accordingly.

If you've had a full head of highlights before then you'll know that the process of applying them and leaving the hair to develop can take quite a while and what I loved about being at Hooker & Young was that I wasn't just left there while my hair was lifting.  There was always someone to chat to and they genuinely wanted to make my experience memorable and comfortable from checking that I was ok and that my hair was lifting to the correct shade to asking if I'd like any refreshments or magazines.  I must say, it is very refreshing to be able to sit and have my hair done while reading a copy of Tatler or Vogue rather than an out of date copy of Take A Break Magazine from 3 months ago with missing pages.  There's nothing worse than getting to the juicy bit of a story where a woman has come home to find their husband in bed with the next door neighbour only to find that the story comes to an abrupt halt as you turn the page and are left reading the horoscopes.

Once my hair was sufficiently lightened, I was led through to the backwash area where the bleach was washed out of my hair and my hair was shampooed and conditioned using the Kerastase products that Stewart had recommended to me.

During my consultation, he had asked me what my hair was like on an everyday basis, how often I washed it and what my routine was.  I explained that I used to wash my hair every day but for the last couple of years I've been trying to leave it for at least every other day and in recent months I've been leaving my hair to be washed every third day with the added help of some dry shampoo in between.  Stewart recommended a routine to me that he thought would really help my hair and suggested that I wash my hair every three days if possible and at the most every other day.  If sticking to the every three days routine, then I should use a clarifying shampoo once a week as my first hair wash followed by a strengthening shampoo as my second wash and conditioner, and then for the second and third time of doing my hair that week, I should just use the strengthening shampoo and conditioner as using the three products too often may be too much for my hair.  When my hair was washed at the Hooker & Young salon, the same process was used so that I would know exactly what to do when I take the products home and what my hair should feel like.

My hair was washed once using the Kerastase Specifique Bain Clarifiant which is a clarifying shampoo for those with overactive scalps that are prone to oiliness.  Stewart explained that the hair should be washed twice, once to remove impurities, product buildup and alike and secondly to actually clean the hair.   I've been using it since I got home at have found that it does a great job at removing the impurities from my scalp without stripping my hair and leaving it feeling like cotton wool like some clarifying shampoos that I've used in the past have.

For my second wash, Stewart recommended the Kerastase Resistance Bain De Force which is a reinforcing and resurfacing shampoo for weakened and damaged hair.  Since using it at home, I have found that it does leave my hair feeling strong and with a beautifully healthy shine to it but it doesn't weigh down my hair, in fact it leaves it with more body in it.  To condition my hair the Kerastase Resistance Ciment Anti-Usure was used which was another recommendation from Stewart.  Again, I bought this one and have been using it as part of my routine at home and have found that it leaves my hair feeling soft, supple and full of body.  The ends of my hair look really renewed and strengthened and I hope that this continues as the weeks go on.  I'll update you all on that soon.

It was also at this point that I had a toner applied to my hair as a blanket colour to give me that cooler tone that I love.

Back at the chair, Stewart began to cut my hair into the style that we'd discussed in my consultation.  Originally, I had went in wanting a side fringe but when Stewart suggested a centre parting and showed me how it would look in my hair, I decided to go for it as you all know how much I love to create big sweeping curls in my hair for a night out and I thought that it would be perfect for this style.  It would also mean that I'd still be able to scrape my hair back into a ponytail or a top knot for when I'm looking really fabulous at the gym...

Stewart then moved onto blowdrying my hair and told me not to worry as he would show me how to blow dry it into the style, making it easy to recreate at home.  It's awful when you have your hair done at a salon and you find it difficult to achieve the same look when you get home.  I've been trying out Stewarts tips since I had my hair done last week and I feel confident that I've been able to create the same look at home because Stewart went through the technique and products used in detail.

In the Hooker & Young salon, while my hair was damp, Stewart used the Kerastase Resistance Ciment Thermique in my hair first of all which is a light weight, heat protecting cream which he distributed throughout all of my hair.  Then he used the Oribe Creme for Style on my hair which helps to secure your style in place offering firm yet flexible hold and taming frizz.  Stewart applied the Clynol Massive spray liberally through the roots to give me some volume and the Kerastase Densitive through the ends of my hair because he said that it helps to preserve the hair at the ends so that it doesn't become any thinner.

After applying those products to my towel dried hair, Stewart moved on to blow drying my hair, showing me exactly how to dry and style it as he went.  His steps were so easy to pick up and follow.  I've found it really easy to do at home and gaining some knowledge from him has been invaluable.

He used a 25mm heat retainer round brush to style my hair (like this one that I have at home) starting at my fringe.  He said that the trick to getting that sweeping fringe either side of the face look is to blow dry the fringe down as a whole first.  So he took the full fringe, got the small brush right in under it and then blow dried it as a full fringe.  The key is to twist the brush at the root and pull upwards to create lots of lift and volume, plus a curl under on the ends.

Stewart then moved on to the rest of my hair and first focused on roughly drying my hair.  He explained that this could either be down with my head tipped upside down or while sitting up but the key here is to twist the sides away from the face as you blow dry them and to brush up and blow dry up from above the ear to create of volume.  He blasted my hair off until it was 80% dry and then got down to really styling it.  Using a few clips, he sectioned off my hair and was able to take big sections with the hair being almost dry.  Then, using the same round brush, he blow dried my hair using the twist and pull up method which gave my hair an incredible bouncy blow dry with a lovely sight curl on the ends.

I have been trying this method out each time I've washed my hair and found that it gets easier each time I try it.  It was a little strange at first as I'm used to using a far larger round brush bust I've found that using the smaller one works really well for getting that bouncy look in my hair, especially as its a couple of inches shorter than it was before.  I've also found that my blowdry is tighter and lasts longer as a result.  Usually my hair would last until the next day and then I'd have to restyle it whereas with this method, I can get two days out of my blow dry.

Once my hair was dry, Stewart added some of one of his favourite Oribe products into my hair, the Thick Dry Finishing Spray and I instantly loved it and had to buy one to use at home.  This is an amazing product that adds so much extra thickness and volume to the hair without making it crispy.  So many of these texturising products make your hair feel really dry and awful but this one doesn't at all.  I absolutely love it and I adore the difference that it made to my hair.

After having my hair done at Hooker & Young, Wynyard
After having my hair done at Hooker & Young, Wynyard
This is the finished result.

Wow.

I'm sure you'll agree that this colour and style is a very welcome change to my hair and I cannot thank the super talented Stewart enough!  I love the way that my hair looks in these pictures when I had first had it done and now, a week later.  The colour suits my skintone and is exactly the right lightness that I was going for and I feel as though the cut really suits me.  I left the salon feeling like a million dollars and have already booked my next appointment to return.  There's nothing like the feeling of an amazing hair cut and I'm so pleased to have discovered Hooker & Young in Wynyard.  I would recommend them to anyone!

Another thing to mention is that Stewarts knowledge of the latest trends is exceptional.  While styling my hair Stewart talked to me about the hottest trends in hair for this spring and summer.  He said that choppy styles are really in, especially with beachy waves and that the hottest colours come from a more pastel colour palette.  Ombre is still very much 'in' except this year its all about the colourful ombres with deep purply pinks fading into light pastel pinks.  Some of the other stylists in the salon were already sporting this trend and it looked fabulous.  Since going to the salon, I've actually been considering adding a small amount of pastel colour into my hair for the summer which is a big step for me as I've never had anything other than blonde and until recently, the dark blonde/brown in my hair.  If you're someone who likes to experiment with colour then I'd highly recommend going to see Stewart to have your hair done.

The great thing about going to Hooker & Young is that yes, you're in a top salon  in one of the North Easts most exclusive locations, having your hair done by a top stylist but it isn't pretentious at all.  Everyone who I met there was friendly, kind and approachable and treated all of their clients with polite respect regardless of who they were.

I'm usually quite shy but I felt completely comfortable in asking any questions that I wanted, however silly I thought they would sound, and I was made to feel confident in what I was asking and saying about my hair.  I feel as though this is really important when going to a hair salon, especially for the first time because sometimes you can feel pressured into accepting whatever style and colour the hair dresser says that you should have and you can feel uncomfortable speaking up.  This isn't the case and for the experience of feeling at ease alone, I would recommend Hooker & Young.

If you'd love to book in with rising star Stewart, then I have a fantastic offer for you.

  1. Such a big difference, your hair looks a lot healthier. And brave also. I'm one of those people that hairdressers hate, I get there and I just get a little trim and if they cut too much I freak out internally.

  2. Ooh I LOVE your new hair! It always looks gorgeous but the length and the curls on the ends look absolutely lovely. You must have been so pleased with the results. I am trying to find a hairdresser who can cut my naturally wavy/curly hair...it's not as straightforward as it sounds! There's a great stylist in Birmingham but as I am in Kent that's quite an epic journey for a hair cut. I shall keep trying, though. Great post xxx

Hooker and Young sounds absolutely amazing, I'm so glad you did such a detailed review - I know so many people who get very nervous about visiting a hair salon so I'm going to be pointing people in the direction of here as your experience sounds so lovely.

To find a hairdresser who listens to what you want, understands your hair and gives great advice is priceless! I haven't actually found "my" hairdresser yet, I moved to the North East 2 years ago and have been flitting between different salons trying to find "the one" .. I need to give Hooker and Young a go!
