Love Your Legs? Show Them Off With A Plus-Size Skirtini

For a lot of women, myself included, shopping for a swimsuit can be about as much fun as waiting on hold to the Inland Revenue. Lately there's been so much chat online about getting a bikini body and I really don't think that that helps women at all when they're going to choose their swimwear. It adds pressure to the buyer as they're often worrying about what other people will think they look like as well as how they look in their swimwear. I don't think that anyone should feel uncomfortable in any form of swimwear, regardless of their size. You don't have to be a particular size to love your body and to show it off in a great piece of swimwear. If someone wants to wear a swimsuit, a bikini, tankini, swim dress or skirtini then I think they should go for it and wear whatever they feel their best in.

I do think that shopping for swimwear is getting easier for women of all sizes because their is so much choice available online now rather than having to rely on restrictive department stores and catalogues. I honestly don't know what I would do without the internet as it is always the first place that I turn to when I'm shopping for my swimwear. I love that I am always one click away from my dream swimwear and lots of my friends say the same thing.

I like to order lots of different sizes and try them all on from the comfort of my own home, where I'm not getting all hot and bothered under changing room lights and then I return the pieces I don't want to keep without any scrutiny from store staff.

Shopping on the internet has really enabled me to find a flattering bathing suit for my holidays year after year and it has given me the confidence to try on styles that I wouldn't have tried on if I were in store.

For me, swimsuit confidence really comes down to the fit of the item and how it makes you feel. If I feel as though a piece fits me well then I feel more confident in it. When shopping for swimwear, there's so much more to consider than simply picking up your usual size from the type of cups, to the way it ties and how high the legs are, as all of these elements and more go into creating a swimming garment that fits really well or that makes you feel your best in. The latter of which is the most important in my eyes. I have a plus size swim suit post coming up where I talk about this in more detail so stay tuned for that!

Shopping online offers so many key advantages than shopping in store as instead of being forced to settle for the same basic black one-piece that you've been wearing for years and years, you are able to experiment with a multitude of new cuts and styles. While the high street selection is getting better, the plus size selection has a really long way to go and for the time being, online is certainly the way forward. Ultimately, the choice is yours but if you want a little guidance, then you could try out one of the many quizzes and articles online to help you to pick the right style, depending on your shape, favourite type of fashion and beach activity (maybe you’re more of a poolside lounger than a hardcore swimmer, either way, no judgment! Personally, I'm a poolside lounger that likes to get involved with a daily aquafit session!).

There are so many specialty retailers out there that make it so easy for you to browse through their site, looking at dozens of styles, colours and national brand names. You just don't get that kind of choice when shopping on the high street, especially if you're plus size like I am.

I've also found that trying to find a swim suit in store is really difficult in the colder months of the year, unless you go to a speciality store of which there are very few. The internet makes finding a swimsuit easy at any time of the year though so if you book a last minute winter sun getaway or family cruise, you’ll no longer be at the mercy of whatever dusty option a department store pulls out of storage! Plus, you can also look into daring new styles that play up your best features.

Styles online are no longer limited to one-pieces. The high-waisted bikini for instance, is a retro-inspired look that plays up a smaller waist while still offering lots of coverage. This can help to give any figure that hourglass silhouette. Pair it with cute wedge heels and a scarf tied in the hair, to tap into your inner Marilyn Monroe or Bettie Page (obviously red lipstick is a must, even at the beach) or add flip flops and a kimono for a laid back but still glamorous look.

Another trend to take advantage of is the skirtini. This look pairs a traditional bikini or tank top with a full ruffled skirted bottom. With this style, you’re getting the best of both worlds – the coverage you may want with a youthful, trendy look. I think that they look really flattering and this style has given me a lot of confidence when wearing my own swimwear. It draws attention to the legs but covers areas of the body that some ladies don't feel comfortable with, for example their upper thighs, tummy or in my case, mothers apron. Whether you plan to spend most of your holiday sunbathing or playing in the water, a great plus-sized suit will be tailored to fit your curves, your body and personality and everyone has the right to feel great on the beach.

So do yourself a favour ladies and buy plus size swimsuits online for your next sunshine getaway. SwimsuitsForAll is a great retailer that offers all kinds of stylish options in sizes 10 to 34. Whether you want to experiment with side cutouts, trendy patterns or high-waist cuts, you can see all kinds of options just by searching for your size which is so handy. This brand is also a leader in the fight for great plus-size fashions – they’re responsible for getting Ashley Graham in the recent “Swimsuit Edition” of Sports Illustrated this year.

I'll be sharing with you my favourite swimwear pieces this summer on my blog very soon and I hope that they'll inspire you to go outside of your comfort zone. Who know, you may find yourself in a flirty pastel skirtini readymade for a spring fling!
