Boots Makeup Haul | 5 New Drugstore Finds

Boots Makeup Haul 5 New Drugstore Finds

A few weeks ago I'd spent my evening reading blogs and watching YouTube videos and I had this sudden urge to do a spot of drugstore makeup shopping.

That may sound quite normal to a lot of people but I don't tend to buy a lot of makeup and when I do it is generally from high end brands.  I definitely have more makeup than the average person and certainly more than one girl should need but I don't, by any means have an exhaustive collection.  I like to only have a small number of the same types of products on the go at the same time and I try to force myself to wait until something has ran out before buying the same type of thing again.  If I didn't, I'd literally be constantly overrun with products and I wouldn't be able to save a penny which is something I'm really focusing on at the moment as I'd like to buy a house in the next year.

I also said that I don't tend to buy a lot of products from drugstore brands, which is true and I think thats because when I do treat myself to some new makeup, I like to go for the more expensive brands with the upgraded packaging and personalised service at the counter; its all about the experience I guess.  I also opt for high end brands because of their quality.  Especially for base products, I find that because I have oily skin, the best foundations available to me are from high end brands because every single one that I've tried from the drugstore has failed to be as long lasting and oil busting as my higher end ones which ends up costing me more money in the long run than just buying one bottle of the one that I know

However this year I have tried more and more drugstore makeup from the likes of Freedom and Makeup Revolution and I'm stupidly beginning to remember that just because I prefer to buy higher end foundation thanks to my super oily skin, that doesn't mean that there aren't some absolutely amazing drugstore products out there, especially when it comes to lips and eyes.  I have decided that I really should treat myself to some drugstore make up and try out some of the products that I've seen spoken about loads online that I think would work for me.

So when I tweeted saying that I was feeling the need for a drugstore spree and the lovely Emily from British Beauty Addict replied to say that she was equally feelin' spendy, we decided to collaborate on a 5 New Drugstore Finds style post.

I headed to the big Boots in the Metro Centre to seek out my drugstore makeup goodies as I love how spacious and well laid out the store is.

There was one product that I knew I really wanted to try and that was the Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer.  It was so easy to spot thanks to the orange lid and I tried the tester on the back of my hand before adding a tube of the lightest shade, Ivory, to my basket straight away.  I didn't bother trying out the other shades because I knew that I wanted, rather than needed, the lightest shade, regardless of whether it was technically too light for my skintone.

It isn't by the way but I didn't know that at the time.

You see, I suffer with dark circles and at first I thought that I was dehydrated but I drink so much water that really can't be the case.  Then I thought that it was my skincare but my eye cream is so hydrating and softening.  I guess it could be a lack of sleep as I do have an often disrupted sleep pattern thanks to my neck pain but that's not going to go away anytime soon so rather than treat the dark circles, I've been looking to conceal them instead.

That's what I wanted the lightest shade of the Wake Me Up Concealer.  I figured it would be the best way to conceal the darkness in the corner of my eyes and then give me an amazing illuminated effect a la Kim K in a triangle shape under my eyes and it certainly does.

The Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer is probably my favourite of my 5 New Drugstore Finds.  It has a light consistency and is very buildable which makes it perfect for use under the eyes.  Plus it lasts all day without fading.  I absolutely love that it doesn't settle into the fine lines under my eyes as that's a really pain for me.  Even though I love my Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, I find that it does settle into the lines slightly which I am self conscious about and I think its because it has a thicker consistency than this one.

The Wake Me Up Concealer has this beautiful brightening effect that really makes me look awake and well rested.  It seems to reflect the light well in an illuminating way, without being glittery or sparkly.  I can see this being a concealer that I'll repurchase when it runs out as I've used it almost every time I've done my make up since I bought it.

The next product that I bought was the Soap and Glory Kick Ass Powder which I have heard so much about on YouTube.  I was very pleased to be able to find it in the new plastic, hard packaging rather than the cardboard packaging that it used to be in.  I hate flimsy packaging and have heard that the cardboard packing that this used to have would often break at the join which means that you wouldn't be able to take it out and about with you- so annoying!

When I bought this, I actually thought that I was buying the One Heck Of A Blot Powder!  Although when I picked it up, I knew it was the Kick Ass Powder and that's exactly the product name I'd gone in looking for but for some reason, I thought that it was the mattifying powder but that's One Heck Of A Blot.  I'd wanted it for its mattifying properties and even until I'd started writing up this post, I didn't realise that it wasn't the right one that I'd intended to buy!

However this has been a blessing in disguise as this powder is absolutely brilliant.  The Soap and Glory Kick Ass Powder is a light, translucent powder that you can use to set or to touch up your makeup throughout the day.  I've found that when you swatch this powder, you do pick up the powder unevenly on your fingertip, I'm not sure whether thats just how the powder is pressed or because of the embossing of the text 'Instant Retouch' that is on the powder.  Either way, when you swirl your brush in this powder it picks up on the brush easily and evenly without kicking up too much powder.  It is relatively finely milled and feels buttery soft to the touch.
Its known as an instant retouch powder because it has has the ability to blur and have a camouflage effect on the skin which makes it look smooth and soft as though it has been retouched.  I'm wearing it in both of the makeup looks that I have pictured here and I definitely think that it has made a noticeable difference to the way that my skin looks.  I have also noticed that it makes my makeup last longer before my skin starts to look shiny and on days where I'm wearing my makeup for a very long time, if I retouch my makeup with this powder then it completely refreshes the look of my makeup and makes it look as though I've just applied it.  I honestly can't recommend it enough!

In a bid to banish my dark circles, I thought I would buy another under eye concealer and the Seventeen Phwoarr Paint in Fair seemed like it would be a good option as when I swatched it in the shop it was very heavy duty.

There wasn't a particularly wide shade selection, only fair and medium from what I could see and since I was looking for a very brightening effect under my eyes, I decided fair would be the best choice.

The colour of this concealer is absolutely spot on.  It is very light without looking ghostly and it does a really good job at concealing dark circles and even areas of redness or blemishes on the face.

I applying it under my eyes with my finger in a patting motion as I find that swirling my finger around in it and lightly pressing it into place helps to warm the product up, making it easier to work with.  I've tried using it simply pressed into the very corners of eye near my nose, which is where I get the most darkness and I've tried applying it with a small concealer brush under my eyes and down in a triangle shape and both work equally well to conceal my dark circles and illuminate under my eyes.

The use of a concealer brush helps the product to blend into my foundation where the two join so that it looks seamless.

Since this concealer is so heavy duty, it is one that I will reserve for nights out and for very dark circle days only as I have found that its thick consistency and quite dry formula does cause it to have a tendency to settle into the fine lines under my eyes.

There was actually a primer that I wanted to buy from Seventeen but every single one had been opened and used.  That's the big downside to drugstore shopping for me.  I love that there are plenty of testers but why people feel the need to open all of the new ones as well is absolutely beyond me.

Needless to say, I didn't end up picking up the primer but as I'm thinking about doing this kind of post every few months, I'll certainly look out for it next time.

Last summer I ran out of my favourite felt tip liner which I was gutted about because it is the best I've ever used and it was only a few pounds.  You might be wondering why I didn't repurchase it, well I had an Eyeko felt tip liner in my stash and I really felt as though I ought to use it up before I purchased another of my favourite ones.  At the time that I bought the Collection one, there wasn't that many felt tip liners available but now there are loads and I'm sorry to say that the Eyeko one isn't one of the best.  It is super black but it drags and seemed to become drier quite quickly.  I just don't like it compared to the Collection one, especially as it is far pricier.

I was going to take this haul as an opportunity to repurchase the Collection liner but as this post is about five drugstore makeup products that are new to me, I wanted to give something else a try.

Seventeen had a great offer on where if you spent over £5 you got a free lip crayon.  I'd already picked up the L'Oreal Superliner to buy as I'd heard SO much about it but as the offer was on Seventeen products, I thought I'd look at their liquid liners and found their Make Your Mark Precision Eyeliner Pen and decided to put the L'Oreal one back and get this one instead.

The Seventeen Make Your Mark Precision Eyeliner Pen is absolutely fabulous.  It has a sturdy felt tip nib that has just the slightest bit of movement at the tip to make it super easy to work with whether you're doing something really fine and detailed or a chunky winged eyeliner look.  It is super black, ridiculously long wearing but very easy to remove as well.  In short, it is perfect and I love it just as much as the Collection one.

Eyeliner pens are definitely one product that you can save a lot of money on.  In my opinion, there's no point in spending a fortune on one from a high end brand when there's absolute quality like this one available for a very low price.

After I'd chosen the eyeliner, I discovered that Boots had actually ran out of the lip crayons to give away so the sales assistant gave me a £9 Bourjois Bronzer instead- score!  She said that the lip crayons aren't very good anyway and as it happens, this bronzer is really good so if you're ever in Boots and you can't find any of the freebies, ask as you never know, they might offer you something else instead!

Revlon Colorburst Lacquer Balm in Vivacious

The last product that I picked up was the Revlon Colorburst Lacquer Balm in Vivacious.  There was actually a few of these lippies that I loved the colour of but I picked Vivacious because it seemed like the perfect pink for the summer because it is bright and vibrant but it could take me through to the winter months as it does have a somewhat jewel air to its tone.

Revlon Colorburst Lacquer Balm in Vivacious

This is basically a chubby lip crayon that I'm sure you've seen a million times before in other peoples lipstick posts.  I love how moisturising and softening it is on the lips; this colour certainly doesn't cling to any dry areas of the lips with this shea, mango and coconut butter infused formula!  Despite it being very soft, I found that it didn't bleed on me at all.  I also like how it felt very comfortable to wear, not sticky or tacky.

Vivacious is certainly a vivacious shade of pink.  It is bold, glam and really brightens up any makeup look.  While this product lasts a good couple of hours before needing to reapply, I do find that it wears unevenly like a lot of lipsticks do.  Its that classic lip liner, no lippy in the centre look which is easily corrected by reapplying.  The packaging of this product is very sturdy- the cap isn't going anywhere until you take it off so its ideal for popping in even the most precious of handbags and with the retractable crayon, you don't need a sharpener with you.  Simply twist up and apply with a compact mirror!

These kinds of products are so affordable yet so effective that there really isn't any need to go high end if you don't want to as the drugstore equivalent is really just as good.

Everything that I purchased here can be bought from Boots online and in store.  Make sure you look out for the special offers and deals that they have on as they were particularly good when I bought this lot (3 for 2 everywhere, spend £5 get X free, etc).

Don't forget to head over to Emily's blog, British Beauty Addict, to see the goodies that she picked up.  I have a feeling that Makeup Revolution fans are going to be particularly pleased to read her post!

  8. Fabulous post Laura! I recently made a small Boots haul after what seemed to be forever! As soon as I saw the Rimmel Wake Me Up concealer I must knew you were going to love it. I recently repurchased one myself and I have missed using it throughout my everyday makeup routine so much. The Soap & Glory Kick Ass Powder has really caught my eye - I usually use Rimmel Stay Matte but think this will be landing in my basket next time around :)

  13. That wake me up concealer sounds great! I suffer from bad dark circles too. But dark circles run in my family. I'm always looking for a good concealer for them. Right now I'm loving the urban decay naked skin concealer and the maybelline age rewind dark circle eraser.

Also that Revlon lippie is gorgeous! Love that bright pink shade. It looks gorgeous on you!
