BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

One of my favourite things about the Beauty Crowd website is that they have a huge selection of products from brands that are either not available in the UK or very difficult to get hold of.

Nicka K are an affordable makeup brand that were founded around twenty years ago in New York but as yet, they haven't quite made their way over to the UK.  They pride themselves on spoiling their customers for choice with so many different shades available across their product range.  Now they're available to buy from Beauty Crowd so we can all get our hands on their makeup.

BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

I have been trying out a few different products from Nicka K and today I'm going to be reviewing each of them for you.

I picked out three products to try out from the Nicka K line on the Beauty Crowd website.

The first being the Nicka K Artliner Pen.

BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

The Artliner Pen is a felt tip liner that is great for creating winged eyeliner looks with.  It is very black in colour and dries very quickly when you apply it which is great as it doesn't smudge or transfer onto other areas of the lid.

BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

Felt tip liners are my favourite kind of liquid liner because they're so easy to apply and you don't have to mess around with a brush.  The Nicka K Artliner is very good and while not the best felt tip liner that I've ever tried, it is good to use.

The end of the nib is tapered but quite thick and stubby making it great for creating a bold, thicker line.  The very tip of the pen is quite flexible which I find is better to use with a lighter hand when trying to draw a fine line so that you have more control over size of the line that you draw.

BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

The lip product that I picked out was the Nicka K Lip Colour Gloss in Boca Raton.

BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

Boca Raton is a relatively deep, rosy pink with shimmer and some silver glitter in it that you can only slightly feel on the lips when you rub them together.  This is a beautiful colour that looks equally as pretty when worn alone or layered over another lip colour product.
BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

The long, thin sponge applicator is unlike anything I've seen before and it isn't my favourite kind of applicator as it seems to remove more lip gloss than it applies and it doesn't feel particularly comfortable or precise on the lips.

That being said, the formula of this lip gloss once applied is fabulous.  It isn't sticky at all or tacky, making it really comfortable to wear.  There's plenty of pigmentation there and it doesn't bleed or stain the lips.  Plus, for a gloss, it is quite long lasting.  I love the formula of this lip colour gloss and would definitely purchase more in the future!

BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

The last product that I picked out was the Nicka K Colorluxe Powder Blush in Petal which is a beautiful cool toned, light pink.  The gorgeous colour reminds me of Well Dressed by MAC.

BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

The unique thing about this blush is that it comes in a pot with a mirrored lid which is perfect for application on the go.  When you want to apply the blush, simply pop off the lid and you'll find a soft, sponge like applicator puff underneath which is attached to a pot with the loose powder blush inside.

I find that when using the blush in this way, I'm able to achieve a precise application however the colour pay off is very light.  Instead, I prefer to use a brush dipped lightly into pot as I find that the effect is stronger on the cheeks which I prefer the look of.  I absolutely love the cool toned light pink colour and I am looking forward to wearing this with a light pink lip and pale skin with a grey toned outfit this winter.

BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

Here are some swatches of these products.  You'll notice the swatch of another product here, the Ultra Slick Lipstick in Gracious.

When I placed my order with the team at Beauty Crowd, they also asked if I'd like to review some Absolute products and this was one of the lipsticks that I picked out.  However when I received the products, the packaging of the lipstick read Nicka K rather than Absolute which leads me to think that these brands may both have the same parent company.  I'll be reviewing the Absolute Ultra Slick Lipstick in Gracious on my blog very soon but for now, let me tell you that it is beautifully pigmented with a lovely formula thats comfortable to wear and relatively long lasting!

BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

While putting this post together, I realised that the Colourluxe Powder Blush really reminded me of a discontinued YSL product that I have from many moons ago.

BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

Looking at these comparison images, it is easy to see how similar the Nicka K Colorluxe Powder Blush and the YSL Touche Blush are in packaging.  The Nicka K pot is a little smaller which is great because it doesn't take up as much room but apart from that, they're more or less the same and while the shades are different, they're both as equally beautiful blushes and very comparable.

If the YSL blush was one of your favourites and you're sad that you can't get it anymore then definitely check out the Nicka K as they're a total fraction of the price but superb quality.

BEAUTY CROWD | Nicka K Makeup Review

I'm so happy that I've been able to try out some makeup from Nicka K.  I think they're a great option if you're looking for affordable makeup in a range of colours and formulas.  Each product is long lasting with great pigmentation!

5 Things I'll Miss About Summer Makeup

Summer Makeup Beauty Bloggers Newcastle

As September draws to a close, I'm very quickly coming to the conclusion that I'm really going to miss my summer makeup looks.  Autumn is officially here and while I have a holiday in January to look forward to, I will definitely be changing my makeup up to make it more seasonally appropriate between now and then.

There are 5 things that i'll miss about my summer makeup looks, starting with dewy skin.  I know, I know, I'm super oily skinned and love nothing more than a matte base but this summer, I've been trying out slightly lighter foundations that leave me with a more dewy look after a couple of hours or so and for days where I'm not wearing my makeup for very long, I've actually been enjoying the look.  Its more about just embracing my natural oiliness than applying a dewy foundation from the get-go, that would be too much but as I'm getting older, a lighter base on my skin is much welcomed as I am starting to, unfortunately, see some fine lines creep onto my face.

Summer Makeup Beauty Bloggers Newcastle

The second thing that i'll miss the most about my summer makeup looks is coral.  During the winter months, I'll happily still wear pale pinks.  In fact, I think pink lips and cheeks actually look lovely during the winter with grey and cream clothing.  However coral is just too summery for me to wear when its cold outside.  I love the look of coral cheeks and lips as well as peach shades but they just don't look all that fabulous on my during the colder months and feel far more spring and summer appropriate.

The same goes for brights which are another thing that I'll miss about summer makeup.  I love bright coral, orange and in particular, pink shades but keep the brighter colours for my summer makeup looks and tone things down with paler hues during the colder months.  I also find that come autumn, I like to switch things up with berry and red tones that I'd otherwise feel a bit out of place wearing during the summer.

Summer Makeup Beauty Bloggers Newcastle

Another thing that i'll miss about my summer makeup looks is bronzed skin.  While I'll always contour, during the summer months, I like to really warm up my skin with false tan and bronzer.  The one that I've really enjoyed using the most this summer is the Bourjois Maxi Delight Bronzer which gives the most gorgeous bronzed glow to the skin.

During the autumn and winter, I prefer to embrace being quite pale and play around with lighter, paler tones with my makeup.  I do have a new bronzer to try out which has a lighter, cooler tone that I'm going to give a whirl now that I'm losing my tan and that may enable to me to stay lightly tanned this winter without looking too summertime bronzed!

The last thing that I will definitely miss now that summer is over is bronze eye makeup.  I really got into bronze eyes this summer, especially with Urban Decay's Baked eyeshadow, and I really don't want to stop wearing this gorgeous shade.  Bronze shades really bring the colour out of so many different eye colours.  They really make the most of blue eyes but suit green, hazel and brown equally well.

I'm looking forward to summer next year already so that I can crack out the bronze and golden smokey eyes and bronzed skin!

What will you miss about summer makeup?

Hairspray The Musical and 1960s Fashion

1960s fashion hairspray the musical plus size

One of my favourite things to do is to go to the theatre.  Theres something so captivating about live theatre whether I'm watching a play, a musical or anything in between.  Its a real treat for me to go to see a show and I like to do it as often as my budget will allow.

When I heard that one of my favourite musicals, Hairspray, is touring the country again, I was so happy.  I love the music and songs, the laughs and the fashion but most of all, I love the feel good message that the musical sends out.

Many years ago, I went to see Hairspray at the Sunderland Empire with my hubby and we got to meet Les Dennis and Michael Starke after the show.  I just wish our selfies with them had been on a better camera as my phone at the time wasn't didn't take as high quality snaps as my phone does now. However I do still have my memories and especially the memory of how positive, uplifted and happy I felt after watching the performance.  I even wrote about going to the musical on my blog five years ago!  You can read the post here.

Entwined in the storyline is a focus on acceptance and inner beauty.  Hairspray is very much about celebrating body confidence and emphasising that all body shapes and sizes are beautiful which is something that I very much stand for myself.

1960s fashion hairspray the musical plus size

To me, a big part of being body confident is to look and, more importantly, feel confident in what you're wearing.  This is very accurately represented in the musical as the outfits worn by the cast are very much about showing off their bodies, regardless of their size, in fun, flirty, figure flattering clothes.

The fashion in Hairspray The Musical epitomises all that was great about 1960s fashion.  From full skirts to feminine dresses that nip in at the waist, plaid print on skirts paired with cute blouses and sweaters and hair bows, pearls and super huge hair.

The great thing is that there are elements of this fashion style that are still just as relevant and, dare I say it, trendy to wear today.  The quickest way to update your wardrobe to this style is with skirt or a dress which are very much statement pieces from the musical and the era itself.
If you're looking for a full circle skirt, then the Sprinkle of Glitter Netted Skirt is a great place to start.  This is a statement piece that would be lovely for a special occasion where you'll up dancing as the ivory net lining under the deep rose pink skirt will look great when you're swishing about the dance floor.  Theres and exposed gold zip at the back too to bring this skirt right up to date.  Wear with a little top and button up or open, boxy cardigan with a pearl statement necklace for a modern twist on the 1960s Hairspray style fashion.

Here are some of my favourite full skirts:
If a full skirt isn't your cup of tea, then try out a pencil or short skirt in either a plain, plaid or check print.  Pair with a top with a peter pan collar and some Mary Janes you're good to go!
If, like me, a dress is more your thing then you have so many options.  Tunic or shift style dresses were so popular as were prom dresses which are my favourite.

Tunic or shift dresses are the less shapely option of the two.  These look especially lovely when they have a peter pan collar and are a great transitional piece because they can be worn alone, or with thick tights during the colder weather.  These dresses are ideal for day and evening wear, whether you're at the office or a party.

Here are some of my favourites:
In comparison, prom dresses are far more shapely.  They show off your waist, or create the illusion of a more shapely one and flatter the figure so beautifully.  These dresses are fabulous for parties and special occasions and are my favourite style of dress to wear.

If I had an endless amount of space in my closet, I'd definitely want to snap up all of these:

For my plus size readers, I'd highly recommend Scarlett and Jo when choosing a prom dress.  They have recently brought out this one and I have had my eye on it ever since I spotted it!  I own two Scarlett and Jo prom dresses already and have worn them countless times.

1960s fashion hairspray the musical plus size

Whether or not you opt for a traditional 1960's print, pattern or colour, a prom dress shape is sure to look super flattering and really pretty and feminine.  When I'm wearing one, my body confidence is definitely boosted and I walk with more of a spring in my step, just like those up on stage in Hairspray!

Hairspray is touring until next May at so many venues across the country.  You can find out the dates and where to book tickets on the website here.  I can't wait to see the performance again!

QUICK REVIEW | Bourjois Maxi Delight Bronzer

During the summer months, I love nothing more than being tanned and looking bronzed.

The bronzing powder that I have used the most this summer is, without a doubt, the Bourjois Maxi Delight Bronzer which I got on a trip to Boots when I was putting together this affordable drugstore makeup post.

The Maxi Delight Bronzer was added to the Bourjois makeup line a couple of summers ago and I can't believe that it has taken me so long to try it.  The bronzing powder is supposed to contain tan prolonging agents that help to keep the skin looking healthy and tanned for longer.  While my skin hasn't seen this benefit, I have certainly loved using it and in this post, I'll tell you why!

The Bourjois Maxi Delight Bronzer is a fabulous pressed bronzing powder that comes in a huge pan, as the name would suggest, 'maxi'.

This is most certainly a bronzing powder rather than a contour powder as it does have a lot of orange tones in it that give you a beautifully sun kissed looking complexion when you apply it.  It does have a slight gold shimmer to it but this doesn't really transfer onto the skin so you can use it wherever you want without worrying that you're going to look like a disco ball!

This bronzer can be used on the face and body and since it has such a large pan, it is very easy to swirl a big fluffy brush in.  I like using this product on my face where the sun would naturally hit and tan my skin and in addition to this, I like to apply it across my chest and décolletage when I am going out at night or dressing up a little more for an occasion.

I love the healthy, bronzed glow that it gives my skin with only a light application.  The powder is finely milled, blends effortlessly onto the skin and doesn't look cakey or cling to dry areas at all.

If you're looking for a powder to give you a bronzed glow then I would highly recommend this one!

The Bourjois Maxi Delight Bronzer is available from Boots and Superdrug.

What is your favourite bronzing powder?

Dr Organic Virgin Coconut Oil Range

In celebration of coconut month, Dr Organic sent me over a coconut gift pack to try out for you.  I've been a fan of their products for years, especially their manuka honey line so I was very excited to try out their virgin coconut oil line.

The Dr Organic Virgin Coconut Oil range is really vast.  They have all manner of lotions and potions from conditioner and body lotion to night cream and body oil.

I received the Organic Virgin Coconut Oil Deodorant, the Body Soufflé and the lip balm.

My favourite product has to be the Dr Organic Virgin Coconut Oil Body Soufflé that comes in a great tub with a flip up lid.  I love the design of the packaging as when my hands are a bit slippy from applying moisturiser to my body, I often struggle to screw the lid back onto tubs of moisturiser like this.  The flip up lid just makes everything that little bit quicker and tidier.

This body moisturiser is so rich and creamy yet surprisingly light and almost whipped in texture.  It sinks into the skin relatively quickly so when I pop this on at night, I don't have to wait too long before getting dressed again.  I have been applying this on my skin after returning home from Turkey with super sun kissed skin and it has done a lovely job at nourishing my skin, leaving it feeling smooth and hydrated.  I haven't peeled once and my tan is still looking great so I am definitely counting this product as one of the reasons as to why I'm still looking as bronzed as I am.

This Organic Virgin Coconut Oil based moisturiser is enriched with Coconut Extract, Aloe Vera Leaf Juice which is great for soothing the skin, Papaya Fruit Extract, Mango Fruit Extract, Cocoa Seed Extract, Mangosteen Fruit Extract, Fig Fruit Extract, Orange Fruit Extract, Bergamot Fruit Oil, Lemon Peel Oil and Vitamin C which is great for brightening the skin.

One product that I wasn't surprised by was the Dr Organic Virgin Coconut Oil Lip Balm.  I've been using other lip balms from this brand for years and years so when I tried out this one, I wasn't surprised to find that, like the others, it is lovely.  So hydrating and moisturising on the lips without leaving a thick, greasy layer or film on them.  This lip balm is great whether you're applying it in the morning, as part of your skincare routine as lip liner and lip stick sits nicely on top of it, or at night before bed as you wake up with soft and supple lips.  It contains Organic Coconut Oil which is so hydrating as well as Shea butter and beeswax, included for their moisturising and nourishing abilities.

If you're using this lip balm during the day then you'll be pleased to know that it has SPF 15 too to protect your lips from UVA and UVB rays.  I've never burnt my lips before but I have a friend who has so I'll be recommending this to her.  The twist up tube is robust and great for travelling so it would be ideal for holidays!

The last product that I've been trying out is the Dr Organic Virgin Coconut Oil Deodorant.  My thoughts on this one are a bit of a mixed bag, mainly because I actually prefer spray or cream deodorants to roll on ones.  This deodorant is a liquid cream roll on that aims to provide skincare benefits to sensitive skin with the coconut oil, aloe vera, sunflower oil, Icelandic Moss and Vitamin E that it contains.  While it was easy to use and I like the packaging, I didn't find the deodorant itself particularly great.  It seemed to take ages to dry and when it did, it didn't give me the refreshing spritz that I get from my usual deodorant and I found that the mild coconut scent didn't leave me feeling fresh which is what I like from my deodorant.

I think I'll pass on the deodorant next time but I'll definitely be happy to repurchase the lip balm and the body soufflé when they run out, especially if I'm off on holiday anywhere hot!

Dr Organic products are available here.

Have you tried any Dr Organic products?  What are your faves?

HennaBK Metallic Tattoos- Signature Henna Designs Review

HennaBK Metallic Tattoos- Signature Henna Designs Review

All summer I have searched high and low for the perfect metallic tattoos and its just my luck that I discovered them right before the end of the season.

The HennaBK Metallic Tattoos are absolutely fabulous because they're all henna inspired designs so they're intricate, beautiful designs that look incredibly pretty on the skin.

HennaBK Metallic Tattoos- Signature Henna Designs Review

HennaBK was created by Khuram who is a professional mehndi artist.  She has over 10 years experience in henna and decided to take her passion for the art further by producing collections of temporary metallic henna tattoos that you can apply at home yourself.

HennaBK Metallic Tattoos- Signature Henna Designs Review

The HennaBK tattoos are really unique as they combine the traditional ancient art form of henna with modern and contemporary designs and the on trend metallic colour palette.  There are so many gorgeous patterns available that can be worn alone or together, as elaborately as you like; there is something for everyone!

HennaBK Metallic Tattoos- Signature Henna Designs Review

HennaBK kindly sent over three sets of their Signature Henna Designs and I loved them as soon as I saw them.  Not only do they combine silver and gold metallic colours but also black, white and turquoise.  I cut out some of my favourites and added them straight to my suitcase for my holiday to turkey.

HennaBK Metallic Tattoos- Signature Henna Designs Review

The tattoos are so easy to apply, just like when you would apply the free tattoos you'd get with bubblegum as a kid!  Simply peel off the plastic, place the tattoo faced down and add a wet cloth to the back until the card is soaked and then gently peel away to reveal the temporary tattoo on the skin.

You can apply the HennaBK tattoos anywhere.  I love the look of them on the upper back, on the hands and inside of the wrists, on the collarbone and on the feet.

HennaBK Metallic Tattoos- Signature Henna Designs Review

Not only are they easy to apply but they're so easy to remove too.

I found that generally, the tattoos would last all night and I'd wake up with them still looking perfect the next day which is something I didn't find with a similar type of metallic tattoo from a different type of brand.

HennaBK Metallic Tattoos- Signature Henna Designs Review

If I applied SPF oil or lotion, or if I went into the pool and got the HennaBK tattoos wet then they would fade and peel away in little bits.  Not in a messy way at all and they didn't leave any scarmy marks on my skin at all.  If I wanted to remove the tattoos myself, then I found that wiping over them with a little nail polish remover on a cotton pad, removed them quickly and cleanly from my skin.

HennaBK Metallic Tattoos- Signature Henna Designs Review

These tattoos look incredible on the skin and really catch the light.  They look even better with a tan.  On holiday, me and my friend Rachel wore them most nights and loved the effect that they gave as the metallic shades catch the light so well.  Lots of people complimented us on them and asked us about them.

HennaBK Metallic Tattoos- Signature Henna Designs Review

HennaBK run different offers too which I think is really cool as its always nice when a company give back.  Each set of tattoos is under £5 and there are offers on multiple packs.

HennaBK Metallic Tattoos- Signature Henna Designs Review

In the tattoo packs, you also get the HennaBK gold logo tattoo.  If you take a photo of you wearing it, tag them in it and share it then you receive 10% off your next order- what a fun idea and who doesn't want to save money?!

You can order HennaBK tattoos here and follow them on Twitter here.  They're a UK based company but they ship worldwide... happy shopping lovelies!

Finish 10 By Christmas Eve Challenge!

Finish 10 Beauty Products By Christmas Eve

Today I wanted to share something a little different with you all.  By now you should know how much I enjoy using up the products that I have, getting the full benefit from them and then throwing the empty packages away.  Products are there to be used after all.

The trouble is that when you're a constantly testing out new products, you end up with several of the same type of product open at once and it makes it quite difficult to finish everything.

When the lovely Leah got in touch with me and asked if I'd like to join her in doing a 'project 10 pan' style challenge in the form of 'Finish 10 By Christmas Eve', I accepted the challenge with open arms.

After quickly picking out ten products to use up from my collection, I sat down to film my video and here it is.  Its not the most captivating video I've put together admittedly but it does show my personality, especially when I drop and smash the Chanel eyeshadow which I still have a pet lip on about, and it is a lot more relaxed.

The thing is, I was filming videos from about this time last year, right through to spring and I was finding it more and more stressful to film because my camera wouldn't record the footage correctly, then it would flash and I wouldn't know what was the matter with it, then I'd upload the footage if I were lucky enough that it had recorded it in the first place and the sound would be all out of sync with the picture.  This was in May and I just gave up.  Faffing on with youtube was taking so much time out of my schedule and it was a lot easier to just write a blog post, especially when I'm blogging daily anyway which takes up a lot of time.

Finish 10 Beauty Products By Christmas Eve

I filmed this video just on the webcam of my Macbook Air and d'ya know what, I think I'm going to film some more in this way.  Its not going to win any awards for the most amazing footage but I'm not doing youtube as some sort of professional business and I kind want to capture the essence of what it was all about in the beginning- real life, in my bedroom, talking about cherished items.

Speaking of cherished items, some of the things that I picked out to finish up in this challenge, I have loved for a long time like the foundation and eyeshadow, some Im not a fan of but feel as though I should be so I'm giving them one last ditch attempt to impress me until they're all used up and heading for the bin.

The idea is that we start on 24th September and continue through to 24th December and try to use up the 10 products that we've chosen.  Anyone can join in so if you'd like to on youtube, your blog or on instagram, let me know in the comments.

Heres a list of the 10 products that I am going to be trying to use up:

  • Ojon Revitalising Hairspray (review, think its discontinued now!)
  • Guy Kremer Add The Volume Body Booster Spray (review, think its discontinued!)
  • O'Right Recoffee Hair Oil (buy)
  • Laura Mercier Oil Free Foundation Primer (buy)
  • Urban Decay De Slick Setting Spray (buy)
  • Collection Lasting Perfection Powder (buy)
  • Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation (buy new formula)
  • Chanel Illusion D'Ombre in 82 Emerveille (buy)
  • The Body Shop Pink Guava Lip Balm (buy TBS lip products here)
  • Cheryl Storm Flower Fragrance (review, buy)

Finish 10 Beauty Products By Christmas Eve

My strategy is basically to keep these products to hand on my dressing table so that they're the ones that I reach for when I'm getting ready and to put away similar products so that they're out of sight so that I'm not tempted to grab them!

Heres my video:

I would really appreciate it if you could click through onto the video and give it a thumbs up.  It really helps me out :)

I'll put up a half way update and then a video right at the end to let you know how I've got on.  Fingers crossed I get through them all... Well, I will.  Determination is my middle name!

Would you like to join in the challenge?  What products are you trying to use up?
