Sensodyne | The Sensitive Teeth Experts

If you've been following me on Twitter over the last couple of months then I'm sure you'll have heard me whine on about my back tooth infection and abscess saga that has resulted in me having to have a root canal.

I'm still waiting to hear to see if the root canal has been successful as I have a dodgy nerve that is hard to numb and a small mouth which makes the back tooth even more difficult to get to.  I might need to pay a fortune to see a specialist or have the tooth taken out altogether which could leave me with permanent numbness down the side of my face because of having this random nerve that shouldn't be where it is.  In short, I'm having a right carry on with it and it has caused me no end of pain and sensitivity.

I'm not someone who usually suffers with sensitive teeth as a whole, it was always just this back tooth that was sensitive and I've had problems with it for years so I just put up with it but after having such a severe infection right next to a nerve, I've been experiencing so much sensitivity to both hot and cold things (even my breath if I'm breathing in and its cold!!) all across the left hand side of my mouth with my upper and lower teeth.  What an absolute nightmare.

Obviously my case isn't as common as normal sensitivity so don't let that scare you.  Tooth sensitivity is usually caused by the gradual exposure of the dentine in your mouth.  This is the softer part of your tooth that is found under the tooth enamel.  Dentine has tiny tubes leading from it called tubules that lead to the nerve and are filled with fluid.  When you eat or drink hot and cold things or sweet treats, they can cause a change in fluid movement which causes the nerve endings to react which is where the short, sharp pain comes from when you experience sensitivity with your teeth.

One day, I was checking my email when I saw that I had been asked if I'd like to receive a Sensitivity SOS Package from the lovely people at Sensodyne.  I'd seen their adverts on TV before and knew that they were renowned for creating mouth care products that were specifically designed for sensitive teeth.

At this point, I was going through my second course of strong antibiotics that didn't seem to be shifting the pain which was bad enough but the sensitivity that I was experiencing in my mouth wasn't helping AT ALL either.  If you'd have told me there and then that you'd knock me out, take all of my teeth out and give me false ones, I'd have lay down ready for the operation.  There's very few pains worse than tooth ache as I have very quickly realised lately.

Needless to say, I replied immediately thanking them for their kind offer and urging them to get to the Post Office pronto and boy am I pleased I did!

In my package, I received two tubes of toothpaste, one of which was a whitening one, a mouthwash and a toothbrush.  All of which I have tried out, barring the whitening toothpaste because I wanted to wait give the original toothpaste a thorough trial and the results have been that good, I didn't want to wait before telling you all about this brand.

I'll still tell you all about the Sensodyne True White Extra Fresh Toothpaste of course.  I know that a lot of people who have sensitive teeth struggle to whiten their teeth because the abrasive formulas can often increase the sensitivity of some areas of the teeth.  However the Sensodyne True White Toothpaste has been created with the lowest abrasion formulation ever in Sensodyne toothpaste so it is more gentle on the teeth and specifically provides specialist care for sensitive teeth.  It is suitable for use twice daily to help to whiten the teeth and it leaves a protective shield to help prevent new stains from forming on the teeth.  This is the extra fresh flavour which is designed to give you super fresh, minty breath while fighting cavities and helping to keep your gums healthy.

When I've have a chance to use this one, I'll report back to you all in terms of how much of a good job it did to whiten my teeth but for the meantime, I would say that if you do have sensitive teeth but would like to have them looking a little whiter, then this Sensodyne toothpaste may be a good option to go for as after trying out the other products, I would definitely trust it.

Now onto the products that I've tried, tested and thoroughly noticed the benefit from.  Starting with the Sensodyne Precision Toothbrush which has been specifically designed for people with sensitive teeth.  Because of that, I switched my tooth brush to this one as the one that I was using before was quite structured and hard whereas this one is far softer in comparison.  This is the toothbrush with medium bristles and they also do a soft too depending on how sensitive your teeth are.

This tooth brush was very easy to use, even though my mouth was sore and I think that it did a really good job of cleaning my teeth as its small head was able to get to the harder to reach areas and the silky bristles were able to clean my teeth gently without causing any additional pain or discomfort.  This toothbrush, together with the Sensodyne Repair and Protect Toothpaste, worked wonders at keeping my teeth clean and my breath smelling fresh without aggravating the pain the infection in my tooth and the sensitivity that the infection was causing.

The Repair and Protect Daily Repair Flouride Toothpaste is absolutely fabulous.  It contains a patented ingredient called NovaMin which is a ground breaking technology that was originally developed for bone repair.  When used in this tooth paste, it finds and forms a tooth-like layer over vulnerable areas of the teeth where the dentine is exposed and within dentine tubules which is what causes sensitivity.  When it is used twice a day, every day, the technology in this toothpaste is clinically proven to help to strengthen and protect the teeth from the pain of sensitivity and actually repair exposed dentine.

While I can't scientifically say that this toothpaste has done this, as I'd have no proof, what I can say is that it did make a significant difference to the sensitivity of my teeth.  After around four days of using this toothpaste, I noticed that I wasn't getting the same sharp pain that I was getting when drinking and eating things that were either very hot or very cold and this change has remained constant for the whole time that I have been using this toothpaste.  Even when I had to go back to the dentists for more work on the problem tooth, I was able to brush easily with the Sensodyne toothbrush and toothpaste without experiencing any increase in sensitivity, despite the fact that my teeth had been aggravated a lot with the procedure I'd had done.

Alongside the toothpaste and toothbrush, I have been using the Sensodyne Cool Mint Mouthwash twice a day, after brushing my teeth.  This mouthwash has a fluoride formula that helps to re-mineralise enamel, strengthen teeth and prevent cavities.  It has a very refreshing minty flavour that leaves a lasting freshness and clean feeling in my mouth.

However what I love about it the most is that it actually feels really gentle.  Some mouthwashes I've used in the past have seemed like a shock to the system when I've swished them around in my mouth however this one doesn't feel like that at all as it isn't too cold or too minty.  It is also free from alcohol which no doubt makes it kinder to sensitive teeth and gums!

After trying out the Sensodyne products above, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to those of you who have sensitive teeth.  They're absolutely great at cleaning the teeth gently and helping to stop sensitivity.

All Sensodyne teeth products are available here as well as from pharmacies and supermarkets.
