Wakey, wakey, rise and shine! It's time for a morning skincare post.
Over the summer and autumn months I've been testing out lots of skincare products with a view to specifically finding those that I think are the best for use in the morning. I've drawn my conclusions and finally, I'm ready to share my favourites with you all.
The first product that I'd must recommend is the Astalift SPF 35 Day Protector Lotion* which is a light, anti-ageing cream that's designed to help to protect your skin from the suns harmful rays.
In the past, I must admit that I've been very laid back when it comes to SPF. I don't mean for the few weeks of the year when I'm on holiday and consciously slathering myself in the stuff, but protecting myself on a day to day basis back home. I've used foundations and skincare products with SPF in them but I've been using them because I liked the products and they just happened to have SPF in, not because they had SPF in and would therefore be good for me.
Towards the end of last year I really started to notice the early signs of ageing on my skin and to be honest, it worried me a little. Fast forward to this summer where I could really see a change in my skin and I felt frightened. When you're young you think you've got years and years of time to look after your skin but really you haven't and it shocked me into finding and SPF that I could wear everyday. Ever since then, I've been consciously using an SPF every day when I know that I am going to be going outside and I really feel happy with myself knowing that I'm protecting my skin.
The Astalift SPF 35 Day Protector Lotion has been one of the best SPF's that I've found on my quest and one that I would definitely recommend for use as part of your morning skincare routine. I love that it has a sun protection of 35 which is more than the other skincare items or foundations that I have in my collection, and definitely sufficient for the amount of time that I spend in the UK sun.
What sets the Astalift SPF apart from your generic sun protection products is that it is far more of a skincare item with tonnes and tonnes of research behind it. Astalift are an award winning beauty brand that have been created by Fujifilm who are photography experts. The skincare products actually use advanced antioxidation technology, which is similar to what is used to prevent the colour from fading in photographs, to reduce the visibility of freckles and skin ageing. It combines water attracting ingredients like hyaluronic acid to prevent the effects of sun exposure from developing on the skin, as well as lots of fancy pants ingredients that do wonders at protecting the skin. I'll not baffle you all with science as I fear as though I'll baffle myself so you can read all about it on the link below. But essentially, it combines ingredients that will protect your skin from harmful UV rays, help to prevent it from ageing prematurely because of sun damage and the high concentration of nourishing ingredients penetrate deep into the skin to boost collagen production and keep the skin looking and feeling luminous, youthful and supple.
Considering this product is cited as a lotion, it actually feels more to me like a cream in texture as it isn't runny like I'd expect from a lotion. It is light weight, non greasy and absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving it smooth, protected and well prepped. This product creates a great base for makeup and it doesn't make my oily skin get greasy at any more of a quicker rate than it already does.
The lotion dispenses from a squeezy tube which is really precise so you can squeeze out just the right amount of product and not waste any which is important as it isn't cheap. At £39, it is far more expensive than an SPF that you'd buy in the aisle but that's because it is far more of a product than those SPFs could ever be. Plus, you can't put a price on protecting your skin. Whats the point in spending all of your money on makeup and clothes if your skin is sun damaged and haggard underneath?

The second product that I've been using is the Jurlique Nutri-Define Multi-Correcting Day Cream which is another Beauty Expert gem.
If you're looking for an anti-ageing day cream then this is the creme de la creme. It contains ingredients that minic the skins natural lipids, including Biosome5 (containing rosemary, horseradish, mulberry, peppermint and glycogen) Squalane and Rapeseed oils. These help to build a barrier on the skin that helps to protect it from the elements and reduce the impact of free radicals on the skin. The environment and sun damage can really make your skin age prematurely so it needs protecting as much as possible from these.
The Biosome5 in the formula is there to penetrate the layers of the skin, the squalane oil helps to prevent water loss from the surface of the skin as it has deep moisture retention properties and the rapeseed oil in the formula is a great antioxidant, source of essential fatty acids and it has a high level of omega 3, 6 and 9.
I have incredibly oily skin so I find that this very nourishing day cream is too heavy for me to wear on days when I'm going to be applying makeup. Instead, I like to wear it on makeup free days to really treat my skin. As the temperature has been getting colder and colder, I've found that I've been doing this more and more frequently because it feels as though its not only moisturising my skin but protecting it from the elements too.
It is really easy to use, simply use the little spatula included in the pot to take out a small amount, warm it a little between the fingertips and then press and massage it into the skin in an up and out motion. Applying the moisturiser in this way in the morning actually helps me to relax because it takes ever so slightly longer to complete than simply slapping it on your face!
After I've applied it, it instantly leaves my skin feeling super smooth and looking youthful. It does sit on my skin a little as it takes a while to become fully absorbed into my skin but once it has, my skin feels so moisturised and hydrated and it stays that way all day. I love the way that it gives my skin a healthy, plump look that makes it look lovely, even without makeup on as it looks as though I really taken care of it.

The last two products that I've been trying out are from a brand that is completely new to me called ZO Skin Health which was created by Dr Zein Obagi. These two products are the ZO Skin Health Ossential Daily Power Defence and the Oclipse Sunscreen+Primer and they're a part of the Sun Smart Duo* for seasonal care as well as all round photo protection. While they are available separately, they're designed to work together to offer the maximum protection against sun exposure, environmental pollutants and irritants.
The Zo Skin Health Ossential Daily Power Defence is a light weight moisturiser that you apply to your skin after you've cleansed each morning. It feels very much like a serum and it looks like a serum as it is a light, milky colour. After application, it is quickly absorbed into the skin and doesn't leave a residue or a film on it. What I like the most about it is that it makes my skin feel hydrated without overloading it, which makes this the perfect option out of this one and the Jurlique to wear under makeup. In fact, this is actually the best daytime moisturiser that I've used because it hasn't disrupted my makeup at all, ever.
It is packed full of great ingredients that are designed to encourage cellular activity to aid in skin cell rejuvenation. There's retinol, enzymes and antioxidants in there too to help repair damaged cells and protect against potential future damage to the skin.
After applying the Daily Power Defence, I then have been following up with the Oclipse Sunscreen+Primer which I have to say, if I'm wearing makeup, is the best SPF I've ever used and that's because it is a primer as well as a sunscreen.
The Oclipse Sunscreen+Primer contains SPF 30 which provides full spectrum UV protection, using titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which are both physical sunscreens. However this sun protection primer also uses natures best protectant, Melanin, as well which helps to neutralise the free radicals that are generated by sunlight, for increased protection.
Like with the Daily Power Defence, it comes in a bottle with a pump making it easy, precise and clean to dispense.
The Oclipse Sunscreen+Primer has a peachy coloured tint to it which I actually find helps to neutralise and even my skintone, plus it seems to have a blurring effect on my skin, especially over my large pores on my cheeks either side of my nose. It leaves my skin with a super smooth matte finish that is silky to the touch and makes a great base for makeup. I've used a number of different base products with this SPF primer and have found that every single one has sat perfectly on top of it. I couldn't be happier to have found an SPF that works so well for my skin with the added benefit of it being a primer and working so well with my makeup too!
So those are my favourite morning time skincare products for keeping my skin hydrated and moisturised and protected from the sun. I use them all equally, I just vary their use depending on the weather/temperature outside, what I'm doing that day and how my skin is looking. I'd recommend all 4 products equally and I really can't stress how important it is to keep your skin protected from the sun even in winter and in cold, rainy Britain, as well as feeling hydrated and moisturised, to protect it from the damaging effects of the sun and to prevent it from ageing prematurely.
