DIY Lip Scrub For Christmas Party Ready Lips

DIY Lip Scrub For Christmas Party Ready Lips

With the party season fast approaching, its time to get ourselves ready for all of the makeup applications, hair do's and nights out in the cold.  Seen as though today has been dark and grey, rainy and freezing, not to mention windy now that Storm whats-her-name has arrived, I thought I would take the opportunity to get a bit of a head start on my party prep.

There are some fabulous products out there in the shops to help you to prepare your body for a glamorous night out but there's actually plenty of ingredients that you'll probably already have lurking around in the cupboards at homthat would do a great job on your body too.  For example, have you ever thought of combining oats with honey, lemon juice to create your own face scrub?  Oats work really well at sloughing away the dead skin from your face and the acidity of the lemon works incredibly well as a natural exfoliant as well as helping to reduce areas of discolouration on the skin.

Another beauty product that you can make at home is a lip scrub.  It is quick and easy to make and I've teamed up with Mira Showers and Midas Touch Crafts to show you how!

All you need is some brown sugar, coconut oil and honey.  I use a ratio of 3:1:1 tablespoons respectively.  These are generally ingredients that I would say the vast majority of people already have in their home, except perhaps the coconut oil which is becoming more and more popular.

If you don't already use it, I'd suggest giving it a go as it is an absolutely fabulous oil which is available everywhere from your local supermarket to a health food store.  If you're going to buy it from a supermarket, I'd suggest checking out the world food isle as you'll generally find it much cheaper there then the UK branded versions.  I have no idea why as its the exact same thing!  When you buy the coconut oil, it'll be in its solid state so you just scoop some out and you can either use it at room temperature in its solid form like in this DIY or you can melt it.

Coconut oil is great for everything from cooking (simply add to a pan straight from the jar and as you heat the pan, the coconut oil will turn to a liquid and work just like you're using vegetable oil except that its a lot healthier for you) to using in your hair as a mask.  If you're applying it to your hair as as an intensive mask or to your body as a lotion then I'd suggest warming the solid oil in the microwave first which takes seconds as it is easier to apply as a liquid.

To create the scrub, simply combine all of the ingredients together and mix with a spoon.  As the coconut oil is in its solid state, it does take a couple of minutes to mix in but once its done, you're left with a great exfoliating lip scrub that moisturises the skin at the same time.  If you want to make it more abrasive, you just need to add more sugar to the mixture.

To use the scrub, I'd suggest running a warm face cloth/flannel under warm water, wringing it out and then placing it over your lips to soften the skin a little.  Then apply the scrub with your finger and rub it into the lips to slough away the dead skin cells.  Warm the face cloth back up under warm water, hold it onto the lips for a couple of seconds and then wipe away the remainder of your lip scrub.  Although you might be tempted to, don't eat the scrub; it might taste nice and be perfectly edible but that's your dead skin you've just exfoliated off!

Store the remainder of the lip scrub in an air tight container and use it as and when you need to.  I always tend to use a scrub when my lips are feeling a bit dry or before an event like a Christmas party when I want to look my best.  Always remember to follow up with a moisturising lip balm, this one is my favourite, and your lips will be super soft and smooth, ready for any lip product you're wanting to wear!

Usually I'm all about the eyes but over the last year or so, I've really got into my lip products and I'm all about making a feature of them.  At the moment, I'm going between two looks; a bright berry like in my latest youtube video and a pinky nude.

To create the look in the Instagram snap above above, I over lined and filled in my lips using the L'Oreal Paris Les Lipliner Couture by Colour Rice in the colour 639 Beige A Nu which has become an absolute staple in my collection as it compliments so many of my nude lippies really well.  Then I applied the absolutely stunning Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick in 40 Rose Incognito which has the most incredibly pigmented, moisturising and long lasting formula.  To complete the look I added a slick of the L'Oreal Paris Infallible Mega Gloss in 103 Protest Queen.  This is a pigmented gloss with a creamy formula and plenty of shine.  It makes your lips look fuller and super glossy.  I love the way that it catches the light!

Of course you could just apply one product or two to your lips but when I'm going on a night out, I often like to wear all three for a really full and fabulous look.  I find that the lip liners I use help to enhance my pout, stop my lipstick from bleeding and increase its longevity, the lip sticks I use add extra colour, texture and hydration and then gloss adds the extra shine that I need to make my lips look full of volume and super juicy!

I love wearing a nude lip on nights out because they go with any makeup look.  This Christmas I'll be wearing them with dark smokey eyes but when I'm wanting something more golden on the eyes, I'll definitely be wearing a berry lip.  Now that I've finished this post I'm really in the mood to go shopping for more lipsticks!

What beauty DIY's have you tried at home?

  6. I have never thought about using a scrub on my lips, if they are dry I just put vaseline on at night, I do like the sound of this though and as it will keep as well I might make some up for me and my daughter to use.

  25. That is such a good idea. I get really dry lips in winter and can surely benefit of a DIY lip scrub. I tried DIY facials e.g lemon and salt scrub and so on.
