Encore at The Customs House South Shields Musicals Performance

This week, I had the pleasure of going to see a fabulous show called Encore at The Customs House in South Shields.

Regular readers of my blog will know just how much I love this venue; you can find out why it is one of my favourite places to go in the region in this post and its not just because the shows like this one are always fantastic.  In short, The Customs House is very much a place of theatre, art, music and cinema all under one community spirit packed roof.

As all of the shows I've seen here have been nothing short of brilliant, Encore had a lot to live up to and it certainly didn't disappoint.

If you love musicals then you'll LOVE Encore.  They're a group of incredibly talented performers who have created a jam packed show filled lots of well known songs, mostly from the stage and films but also from times gone by.  All were brilliantly sung, cleverly performed and very well executed.

I'm a big fan of musical theatre and music in general so this show was right up my street.  I thought that the way they performed the songs from the various musicals was really clever and unexpected, as rather than only standing on stage singing, they really brought the story and music to life through the singers placement on the stage, the lighting and the small sketches thrown in.

I started making a list on my phone of the songs that were in the show but there were so many that I'd be here all day if I mentioned them all, plus I wouldn't want to spoil it for you if you go to see the show yourself.  Lets just say that there's something for everyone in this show, whether you used to love singing along to 'Please Mr Postman' on the radio or if 'Consider Yourself' from Oliver is your favourite musical.  I loved that they included songs from Billy Elliot, especially as it was set in the North East.

Some of my favourite moments in the show were the song from Sister Act and 'When I'm Gone' which many of you may know as the Cup Song from Pitch Perfect, while my friend loved the Les Mis section.

However we both agreed that the Victoria Wood tribute with Let's Do It was the moment of the night for us.  It had us both rolling laughing and we thought that it was a very fitting way to honour the life of someone so talented.

Another fitting tribute came from Andrew on the piano who played and sang a song that he had written for the late Nadia Wearn, a South Shields performer who tragically lost her life at 31, leaving behind her husband and little girl.  There'll actually be a show in June at The Customs House which will be a celebration of her life featuring lots of local performers which you can find out about here.

The show was jam packed with songs and we didn't want it to end.  Right before the encore (predictable, but I like what they did there!), they performed Rhythm Of Life which I haven't heard since my school days when I used to sing it in choir, so that really brought back some lovely memories.  I've been singing it all day!

The immensely talented cast of Encore put on a show that made me dance in my seat while singing along, smiling and laughing but it also made me really appreciate life after hearing about Nadia.

It was a show that brought out so many different emotions and I simply can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves when they come back to The Customs House in November!

  11. I am a huge fan of musicals and the theatre and I think it is wonderful that they commemorated Victoria's memory and also played tribute to a former performer. That is very sweet and I am sure it was emotional too.
