When I first heard that River Island were launching a plus size line, I was more excited than I ever have been to find out that a standard size store were expanding their size range.
I've loved and longed for River Island clothing since I can remember.
I've always been plus sized and have never shopped for clothes in stores like River Island or Top Shop before, well until relatively recently when I went into River Island and found that I could fit into some of their more over sized, size 18 pieces. You might have seen some of the pieces that I bought in one of my plus size haul videos.
What I really love about River Island clothing is the way that they combine the sophisticated with the fun, the classic with the glam and the way that they have the most fabulous range of basics alongside some really bold, out there prints; its all right up my street. They're one of the few stores where I could spot countless things that I love from every category from clothing to underwear and nightwear to accessories, jewellery and footwear.
In a nutshell, to know that they are now doing a plus size range has completely made my year and we're only in April!
The RI Plus line is available in sizes 18 to 24 and from the outset, it is so apparent that the line is very much an extension of their standard range.
Sometimes retailers create a plus size line and it doesn't match their usual aesthetic at all whereas I can imagine every piece in the RI Plus line as a size 12 and as a 22. This is so refreshing and a definite nod to the progress that plus size fashion has made in recent years.
As you can probably expect, I couldn't wait to get my hands on some pieces from the line and while the reality is that I was spoilt for choice, I couldn't help but be drawn immediately to the RI Plus Black Printed Joggers*.
The colourful floral print against the black background is so fun and girlie, very me!
Regardless of your shape and size, you really can't go wrong with a printed trouser. These ones are made from a cotton jersey material and while they're soft to the touch, they don't feel as relaxed or too casual as 'joggers' would usually be. This is great as they look smart but feel really comfortable to wear, making them suitable for wearing during the day with some sandals or slip ons and a t shirt or dressed up at night with some wedges.
I love the shape of these trousers. They're high waisted and have an elasticated waistline which has a lot of give in it, making them a perfect fit and very comfy. The legs are chuffed too which creates a great shape overall. While they don't hug my ankles completely, they're by no means loose and give my legs a lovely shape as they slim down towards my ankles. I think is more flattering on my legs, given that trousers are usually huge on my legs as I have to size up to fit my stomach.
I took these in a size 24 and they fit perfectly. I've deliberately worn them with a shorter top (usually I'd opt for a longer top that would cover my tummy), the ASOS Curve Exclusive Swing Vest, in the hope that you can see how high waisted these are. They sit quite a way above my tummy button which is fabulous news for someone with a longer torso and such a large, low slung tummy like I have as usually high waisted things sit where standard pieces usually would rather than sitting further up the body!
On the particularly windy day that I took these photos, I was at Beamish Hall, going to their fabulous restaurant and brewery, The Stables which is one of my favourite places to enjoy a meal out in the area.
I wanted to wear something that was between smart and casual so I paired my printed joggers with some black flatforms from Primark, you can find similar ones here and here. Shoes like this are a great idea if you're wanting to make your outfit look smarter while still remaining comfortable and relaxed.
Another piece that works in a similar way is the Evans Black Belted Sleeveless Trench which I keep pulling out of my wardrobe to wear every time the sun shines! I wear it tied to the back in an open style but you can wear it belt in the middle too which also looks fabulous, particularly if you're less round than me in the middle. I'd really recommend checking this piece out as I've got so much wear out of it. You can wear it with long, short or sleeveless tops and it looks great over jeans or printed trousers; with the right piece, you could even wear it over a shift dress.
To complete my look, I added my Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac bag which I bought a couple of years ago now in America. They still make this bag but in different colours which you can see here.
If you don't tend to carry too much around with you, they're a fantastic option as they hold all of the essentials like your phone, keys, purse and a little makeup, and more. The strap of this bag can be adjusted to create a short, mid length or long shoulder bag, or it can be worn cross body depending on how long and wide you are in the body.
I can't wait to bring you more outfit posts from the River Island Plus size line; I'm absolutely LOVING the range so far. I've noticed that they're adding new pieces to the collection on a regular basis, including a couple of more pairs of printed trousers just like these.
I've heard on the grapevine that the summer collection is going to be incredible... I for one, can't wait to see it!
