Stay Sun Safe with the La Roche-Posay 'My UV Patch'

La Roche-Posay are one of my favourite skincare brands when it comes to sun protection, so when I heard that they had launched the first ever stretchable UV Monitor called My UV Patch, I was all ears.

The innovative technology in the My UV Patch helps users to measure their UV exposure and assist them to better protect themselves from damaging UV rays.  It works on the basis of wearing a patch that is applied to the skin combined with the use of a dedicated app so that you can Scan, Monitor & Protect!

With over 30 years experience in sensitive skin, suncare and sun awareness, its not surprising the La Roche-Posay are the first to launch something like this and I think its a fantastic way to help all of us to stay safe in the sun.  Lots of us like to get a tan, myself included, but it is important to not risk skin cancer or premature skin ageing for the sake of changing colour.  Sun safety is a top priority for me and it should be for you too!

The patch is a transparent adhsive that you stick onto any area of skin that you want to monitor.  It stretches and moves with the skin, rather than being rigid and working against the skin.  Its really small at around 1 square inch in area and its super thin at only 50 micrometers thick which is half the thickness of an average strand of hair.  While the size of something that could potentially help you to prevent your skin from burning or getting skin cancer shouldn't really be an issue, I know that many people will be concerned with how big the patch will be, so to find out that its really small, thin and moves with the body is a big bonus!

When I first heard about the patch I was thinking, 'how on earth does that work?' but really, while a lot of technology has gone into creating it, its actually quite simple to use.

Essentially, the patch contains photosensitive dyes that change colour when exposed to UV rays to indicate varying levels of sun exposure.

To test your UV exposure, all you need to do is to download the La Roche-Posay 'My UV Patch' mobile app, fill in the questionnaire and then take a photo of the patch and upload it onto the app.

The app then uses a clever algorithm that factors in your personal information, location and the weather data to generate indicators of sun behaviour and daily sun stock.

From there, the app will then provide essential information including sun safe behaviour advice and information about when to re-apply your suncream.  I think that this is such a cool invention, plus it works with all skin tones so regardless of how pale or tanned your skin is, you'll be able to get a reading, sun safety advice and recommendations on when to top up.

The My UV Patch is free of charge from www.laroche-posay.co.uk however there is a waiting list as they're sure to be really popular!  I've signed up for mine so make sure you do too!

  3. This is such a clever idea and I love that it links with the app! A great way to see how much UV we're actually exposing ourselves to on a daily basis :)

  9. This product is so cool! I love the science behind it! It's often forgotten that even though it isn't hot outside we are still getting exposed to harmful UV rays. This patch is great!
