What To Buy The Men In Your Life This Christmas

Mens Christmas Gift Guide 2016

Buying, presents for the opposite sex can often be quite tricky.  For women, I find it easy for me as I'm always keeping on top of the latest trends and the women that I'm surrounded by tend to like similar things to me so that makes shopping pretty straightforward.  Sometimes gents can be a little trickier but thankfully, I only tend to buy gifts for my husband and dad.

When choosing a Christmas gift for a man, I don't like to take too many chances; I buy what I think they'll definitely like AND use.  I tend to think about what they do for a living, how they spend their time outside of work and what they like to wear already and then I base my gifts around that.

This year, I've really embraced a healthier lifestyle and I'm getting fitter each week with regular exercise.  I've finally convinced my hubby to come along with me to the gym for encouragement so top of my list for him was some in-ear headphones.  He has some that came with his iPhone but I don't personally find them to be particularly comfortable and I know that he has told me that they don't tend to stay in his ears for too long without hurting.

I picked up a pair of the JVC Gummy Plus headphones when I was in shopping in Morrisons for a bargain £5.  They'll be great for the gym but he'll be able to use them on holiday too.

Superdrug Gift Stuff Keychain Tool Kit Image

For the handy man in your life, the Gift Stuff Keychain Tool Kit from Superdrug is a fun yet useful option.  It contains 8 practical tools for someone to use whether they're at home, out at work or travelling; pliers, wire cutter, wire stripper, wire crimper, bottle opener, metal rasp, flat head screwdriver and crosshead screwdriver.

For only £3, I think this a brilliant Christmas and really useful.  It reminds me of a Swiss Army Knife but with different tools.  I always remember my dad having one of those when I was a child and it always came in so useful for him, especially when he was fishing or at work.  They were a lot more of an investment though but the ones he has are still going strong now!

Man's Stuff by Technic Tidy Whiskers Gift Set Image

For the man who is into his male grooming, there are so many options available on the highstreet from shaving sets to beard trimmers.  A really affordable option that I love is the Man's Stuff by Technic Tidy Whiskers Gift Set, which is available from Superdrug and Argos.

I got this for my friends husband this year as he likes to wear a mid length, well groomed beard.  It contains a hair and body wash, a beard oil for nourishment, scissors for trimming and a comb; all for around £6 depending on where you buy it from.  Aesthetically, the packaging looks great and the gift itself seems really substantial.  It would make an ideal present for a dad, hubby or friend and at that fabulously low price, you could even gift it to a bearded Secret Santa at work!

Paco Rabanne 1 Million Privé Fragrance Image

I'm not ashamed to admit that I love a great smelling man.  There are so many mens fragrances out there that I love and I ALWAYS buy my husband and dad at least a couple of bottles every year for their birthday and for Christmas.

The first cologne that I ever bought Mr WLL was 1 Million and now Paco Rabanne 1 Million Privé has been released as a dense, even more delicious update to the original fragrance.

If you love the first 1 Million then I'm sure you'll love this one even more because it has a similar scent thanks to the top notes of blood mandarin and cinnamon which were in the original fragrance but it has plenty of new perfume notes in it too.  1 Million Privé is an oriental-woody scent with a heart of hookah tobacco and myrrh resin and a warming, sensual base of patchouli and tonka bean absolute.

The 1 Million fragrances are loved by so many men all over the world and frequently appear in the fragrance charts so I don't think you can go wrong with this one!

Zadig and Voltaire This Is Him! Fragrance Image

If you're buying for a fashion forward guy who loves to try something new then I urge you to pick out the Zadig & Voltaire This Is Him! fragrance.  This smells INCREDIBLE and is actually a scent that I wear myself so its even a good choice for a woman if they like very original scents.

This Is Him! is a sexy, powerful woody-oriental fragrance.  It has a top note of grapefruit, a heart of black pepper and incense and a base of sandalwood and vanilla which combine together to create the most incredibly alluring scent.  You can read my full review of This Is Him! here.

This has to be one of my favourite new fragrance launches in recent years and it is one that I cannot stop recommending to both men and women.  I always suggest buying the gift set of a fragrance where possible as they contain complimentry products that make the gift that little bit more special without costing you a lot of extra money and I'd definitely recommend this with the Zadig & Voltaire fragrance.  Once the person you're giving it to smells this fragrance, they'll not be able to get enough of it!

Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Essence de Parfum Image

For those of you who are unsure as to which mens fragrance to treat them to this Christmas, I'd suggest looking through their existing colognes and aftershaves if you can.  I tend to find that men stick to the same fragrances year after year so buying them one that you know they already like is a one way ticket to being a top gifter year after year.

Once you know what fragrance they already like, you can either buy the same one to replenish their stock, check with a sales associate in a dedicated perfume shop or department for one that has similar notes or you could opt for something in the middle by going for an updated version of the fragrance they love the most.

This year, an iconic mens fragrance that I'm sure many men you know will love has been given a bit of a nip and tuck.  The Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Essence de Parfum is a brand new release with fabulous copper packaging.  The torso shaped bottle has remained but it is now crystal clear and the silhouette has been redesigned to reflect a new interpretation of masculinity; broader shoulders and a narrower on waist.

The original Le Male fragrance is still evident but Le Male Essence is lighter and more sophisticated overall which has proved to be the most delicious upgrade to the original scent.  It has top notes of cardamom and citruses, a heart of lavender and leather and a base of previous woods and costus root.

If you or someone you know found the original to be too heavy then I think this one would be enjoyed more as it is far lighter, perhaps down to the citrus notes!  I love JPG fragrances, especially the iconic Le Male so it was great to see that they had given it a little face lift while still remaining reminiscent and true to the original.

Mulberry Oak Passport Holder Image

Accessories are a fail safe bet for any man, regardless of their age or lifestyle as there's always something that you can find from the Small Leather Goods categories that they  can utilise.

The great thing about SLGs is that they're available from most mens fashion stores so whether you have a small budget or hundreds to spend, you'll always be able to find something great for your money.

If they're a frequent flyer or someone who really enjoys going on holiday abroad then I'd recommend a passport holder.  I bought my hubby this beautiful oak leather passport holder from Mulberry a few years ago and it has kept his passport in pristine condition ever since.  My top pick this year would have to be the black Mont Blanc passport holder which looks uber sophisticated and will be the perfect accessory in any airport lounge!

For the guy who has just moved into a new home or bought a car, a keyring is a great option.  They're available in a range of materials and at every price point so whether you're wanting to spend a couple of pounds on a fun character one or to splash out on a luxe leather Mont Blanc key chain, you're guaranteed to get him a gift he'll use.

Wallets are a fantastic gifting option and again, they are available in a multitude of different styles, sizes and prices.  The Polo Ralph Lauren Black Leather Wallet is a great option if you're looking for a wallet that is from a high quality designer but at a more affordable price and if you're looking for a more luxury option, then I'd suggest the black Gucci Signature Wallet which is absolutely beautiful!

If the man you're buying for already has a wallet, of if you're looking for something smaller or for less money, then a card holder is the way to go.  Years ago, I bought my husband a Mulberry wallet which he has used everyday since but sometimes if we're off out on an evening and he doesn't want his pockets to be weighted down, he'll really protest about having to carry his wallet with him.  Earlier this year, I bought him the matching card holder and he was chuffed to bits with it.  He no longer has to carry ALL of his cards around with him and there's plenty of space in the card holder for some notes in the centre, his driving license and a few bank cards.

My top pick for a budget option would be this card holder from ASOS at £8 which is a great dupe for my designer top pick from Mont Blanc for £80!

Mens Howick Short Sleeved Shirt House of Fraser Sale Image

For the men you know really well, perhaps your dad, brother or hubby, the clothing may be the way to go for you.  I personally find buying clothes for others really stressful as I'm always so worried that I'll get the sizing wrong, especially when I'm buying for Mr WLL as he's very broad shouldered with a slim waist, plus he's super fussy with the fit of his clothes.

This Christmas, I've actually bought him a number of shirts from the brand Howick and I always buy them at House of Fraser in the sale around Black Friday.  Howick shirts are very good quality but they're affordable too, extremely so when they're on sale (I managed to get lots for £12-£14!!) and I find that they wash really well.  We're going on holiday soon so I the ones that I picked out were all short sleeved but they have some great long sleeved options too.

I took the stress out of shopping by actually choosing a different colour/pattern shirt that is the same size, brand and fit as a shirt that he already has.  I do this with a lot of different clothing items so that I don't have that panic and disappointment over whether or not something is going to fit.

There's nothing worse than stressing over what to get someone for Christmas as it can really hinder your enjoyment of the festive season!  I hope my gift guide for men has helped you to pick out something for the men in your life whether that be for your boyfriend, dad, grandad, brother or friend.  If all else fails, get them a gift voucher; I've learnt over the years that one day is not worth stressing yourself out over!
