One product that I often struggle to find, particularly in the drugstore, is a really gritty scrub. Back in college, I used to use the St Ives Apricot Scrub religiously and nothing since has lived up to it for an affordable price tag. Everything is either so coarsely ground that it scratches my skin rather than making any effort to actually slough away my dead skin cells, or sat in so much product that it is far too slippy and gentle on the skin to do any good.
At the end of 2013, I discovered my favourite face scrub of all time, the Goldfaden MD Doctor’s Scrub, which is like having a microdermabrasion facial every time I use it but it is pretty hard going and not something I need to use frequently. Once every couple of weeks is sufficient, plus at £65 a pot, if I used it any more frequently I’d need to take a second job just to keep my stocks in supply.
However at the end of 2014, I discovered what has to be my favourite budget face scrub, the Super Facialist by Una Brennan Rose Brighten and Refine Facial Scrub, which is available in Boots.
The Brighten and Refine Facial Scrub comes from the Una Brennan Rose line which is designed to be a hydrating range, for moisturising and protecting even the most sensitive of skin types. I have tried the Calming Creamy Cleanser (review here) from the range and while excellent quality, it was a little too heavy for my oily skin and more suited to those with drier skin whereas the Brighten and Refine Facial Scrub is much more suited to all skin types, I would say.

Sat in a mildly rose scented cream, the Rose Brighten and Refine Facial Scrub is neither too creamy nor too runny but it certainly feels moisturising thanks to the natural moisturisers that it contains. It has just the right amount of slip to enable the exfoliating particles to glide over the skin while creating just the right amount of friction to slough away the dead skin cells. The exfoliating particles are pretty finely ground, making this a very gritty scrub that feels satisfyingly abrasive on the skin.
I tend to use this in the bath after cleansing while my skin is still damp but not wet as this provides the most abrasive scrubbing effect. I massage it into my skin in circular motions and then remove with a face cloth. If I want a more gentle scrub, then I simply use the scrub when my skin is more wet and remove it under the shower head.
This has been the first drugstore face scrub that I have used in years that has satisfactorily exfoliated my skin and I am actually really surprised with how impressed I am with it. After using the scrub, my skin is left looking bright, smooth and healthy and free from dry, flaky patches. It doesn’t strip the skin or make it feeling tight and lacking moisture. The Pro Vitamin B5 and willow extract that it contains are designed to moisturise the skin, promote cellular renewal and leave it looking brighter.
My skin feels as though it has had an effective spa treatment and the light rose scent is a nice touch. I’ve spoken before about my slight aversion to rose but the fragrance in this product isn’t too strong at all so if you’re the same as me, don’t let that put you off.
At only £8.99 here, it is an absolute steal compared to my Doctors Scrub, and one of the best that the drugstore has to offer. I would highly recommend it!
You can also visit the Super Facialist website to read more about the brand as a whole. You’re also able to purchase the Rose Brighten and Refine Facial Scrub direct from the website (although I’d recommend shopping from Boots so that you get your points!).
