Be still my beating heart.
Surely this must be the most beautiful skincare packaging you’ve ever seen?
I don’t think I’ve ever had something more gorgeous grace the shelves in my bathroom than Charlotte’s Giant Magic Cream in its opulent rose gold pot.
Originally, the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream was only available in a generously sized, 50ml pot but after becoming an instant best seller and being loved by beauty junkies and professionals worldwide, they released a humongous 150ml jar; much to my delight.
From the outer packaging that blossoms like a flower, emerges the stunning rose gold pot filled with Charlotte’s secret magic cream, her instant turn around moisturiser. The formula of this cream was inspired by on one that Charlotte would mix together herself backstage at shows to use on models exhausted skin which would often need perking up thanks to countless long haul flights, photoshoots and the stresses of Fashion Week. She’d keep the mix of ingredients to herself and so, Magic Cream was born.
This is the one skincare product that I have lusted after since it was very first launched and not just because of the packaging! I’ve heard some RAVE reviews about it giving your skin the appearance of a good 8 hours sleep, as well as some that weren’t quite so positive, particularly from some people saying that this cream wouldn’t be suitable for oily skinned women.
Now I don’t know about you, but I’m often known to be one of those girls that wants to do something even more when she has been told not to do it. So you can imagine that this only spurred me on to want to try it for myself to see how it would work on my oily skin and to ultimately, discover if the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream is worth the hype!
In short, YES! Yes it is!
Magic Cream is a hydrating, anti-ageing moisturiser, designed for all ages and skin types. Often used backstage before catwalk shows, this cream is loved by professionals because it transforms the skin instantly from looking dull and lifeless to hydrated and glowing.
Magic Cream contains sodium hyaluronate which forms a film of hyaluronic acid over the skin and this is great for binding moisture to the skin, making it look plump and youthful. There’s also Wild Pansy extracts which help renew the skin and lock in moisture, Rosehip Oil, Camelia Oil and antioxidant Vitamin E which help to hydrate dull skin and the multi-tasking BioNymph Peptide Complex which helps to stimulate collagen production and fight free radicals. These are are the molecules that are all around us that can damage our skin and make it age prematurely, such as the environment to sunlight and more.
The supercharged, paraben-free formula doesn’t quite stop there as you’ll also find nourishing Vitamin A and C, Frangipani extracts, Damask Rose Water and Organic Aloe Vera which all work together to soothe, calm and hydrate the skin. Sound’s perfect doesn’t it?
While some reviews say that this cream isn’t suitable for oily skin, I would seriously beg to differ. I got my pot at the beginning of January but started using it at the end of the month when I returned home from my holiday. My skin was glowing but it was parched after spending weeks in the Maldivian sunshine. It was in need of some serious hydration which is precisely what this cream gave my skin as day after day, it would look glowing, nourished and my makeup would apply beautifully, even on areas like my nose where I had started to peel a little.
I could instantly see how incredible this moisturiser would be for those who truly do have dry to very dry skin. However that doesn’t mean that it should be written off for oilier skins as fast forward to the end of February, my skin is back to its usual oily self and this cream is still working perfectly well for me, I couldn’t be happier with it!
Magic Cream looks rich and thick in the pot but when applied to the skin, a little goes a very long way and rather than feeling heavy, it simply feels nourishing and luxurious. The formula is so smoothing, it glides onto the skin without any effort or causing any irritation and it sinks in relatively quickly- usually by the time I have done my hair.
It leaves my skin looking instantly more perfected, healthy and radiant. The way that the moisturiser feels on my skin after use is incredible; my skin feels so soft and smooth, making it a great base for makeup. I always feel as thought I can skip a hydrating primer when I use this moisturiser and if I’m not applying makeup afterwards, I’m able to go out feeling as though my skin looks great just as it is.
If you’re oily, I really think that it comes down to the type of finish that you like on your skin as to whether or not you’ll choose to wear this cream on a daily basis. It leaves my skin with a gorgeous glow and a light dewy finish. My mattifying foundations (Dior Skin Forever and Chanel Perfection Lumiere) blend effortlessly into my skin after I’ve used this moisturiser and the combination of the two makes my skin look incredible; smooth, even, hydrated and lit from within. My skin doesn’t look flat, dull or overly mattified, it just looks like beautiful skin! I thought it was only myself who had noticed, until the complements on my skin what foundation I’m wearing have been coming in and they’re always on days where I’ve used this cream.
I wouldn’t apply a foundation that was incredibly mattifying such as the Clarins Ever Matte (review here) and the Estee Lauder Double Wear (review here) after using this moisturiser as they tend to have a high powder content that I don’t think would mix well with a hydrating base. I tend to use those more when I need my makeup to last a VERY long time and I use a very mattifying setting powder which does make my skin feel dry but it also ensures that my makeup doesn’t slide off my face when the oil strikes!
The Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream doesn’t prolong the wear of my makeup but it doesn’t make my skin become oily any faster than it usually would which is why I would recommend it for oily skin types as well as those with dry skin. As I’ve aged, I really don’t like the look of chalky matte skin on my face anymore but I still need my makeup to last so Magic Cream is perfect for me as it gives my skin that natural, well rested glow but my makeup still lasts. Whether that will change come the summer months with the warmer weather, I don’t know but even if this cream turns out to be too heavy for me in the summer, I will gladly reserve it for winter days!
I tend to apply it either on days that I’m going makeup free or when I’m wearing makeup for up to around 6 to 8 hours. I use it in conjunction with a skincare routine that I’ve been enjoying daily since the beginning of December which is largelyPaul & JoeandEstee Lauder Advanced Night Repairbased and it works flawlessly with them. More on that in another post!
I would suggest that the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream should only be used during the daytime as it includes sun protection which isn’t needed at night and can clog the skin. This cream has an SPF 15 and an anti-UVA filter within the formula to help to protect your skin from the suns harmful rays which can cause premature skin ageing. Since the level of SPF protection isn’t particularly high, should you be in a hot country or where the sun is very strong, then it may be best to double up with a separate SPF in a higher factor too.
I’d highly recommend the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream to women who love to take care of their skin, regardless of their skin type, and there’s nothing stopping men from using this cream either. I’ve applied it to Mr WLL skin on many occasion and it leaves his skin looking hydrated, moisturised and perfected; he even commented on how great his skin looked after the first use which shows what an instant effective it has, even if you’re not applying makeup after it.
The 50ml and especially the 150ml jars are certainly high end and its important to make sure that the product will be right for your skin before committing to the cost of the full size. Thankfully, Charlotte Tilbury counters are all over now and those who work on the counters are always so friendly and helpful which makes this your ideal opportunity to pop along and ask for a sample sachet so that you can try out the moisturiser at home first.
The LIMITED EDITION 150ml pot of Magic Cream is available from House of Fraser, Selfridges and Net-a-Porter while stocks last. The 50ml is a permanent product along with the rest of the Charlotte Tilbury skincare line that I cannot wait to try!
