Like so many of us, I’m one of those girls thats always on the go. Especially at the weekend when Mr WLL and I are out and about running errands during the day and we’re usually out at night to a party, event or date night.
I like to look my best when I’m going out but that often takes more time that I have so I like to have a few go-to hair styles to turn to when I’m in a rush to look put together and party ready.
This hairstyle is a quick and easy up do that I turn to when my hair isn’t freshly washed because it helps it to hold in place easier as I’m putting it together, before spritzing it with a strong hold hair spray.
Perhaps this isn’t a style that looks particularly ground breaking in photos but in real life its effortlessly cool and the great thing about it is that you can make it as perfected or as messy as you like. This is about as messy as I ever make it. A more perfected look would be more like a chignon but since my hair was quite short when these photos were taken, and a day or two old, the messy look suited it far more.
To create this hairstyle, you’ll needed to roughly section off the front section of your hair, about two inches back from your hair line. Tie this to one side.
Then brush your hair back over and back comb the top section. Sprinkle in some plumping powder and massage it into the root for added volume and texture.
The one that I used was the Fudge Urban Powder Styler.
The Powder Styler is an instant root boost that offers great hold as well as plenty of texture and volume. It is a very fine, dry powder that you sprinkle into the roots of the hair and then rub it in with your fingertips to boost and volumise the hair. This powder leaves a matte finish on the hair where you’ve used it but it doesn’t dry the hair out at all so it still looks fresh and healthy.
I’m not usually a fan of powders like this because they often leave my hair feeling really sticky and like cotton wool but this one isn’t too bad at all. I can feel it in my hair after use so although it does work fabulously well on freshly washed hair, especially when it is fine and slippy like mine (so annoying when you’re trying to put it up!), I prefer to use this on my hair when I know that I’m going to be washing it the next day as I don’t like to be able to feel any residue in my hair.
I love the hold that this gives my hair and whether I’m putting it up like this or creating big, bouncy curls, it gives me lots of natural looking volume that stays in my hair all night long.
After rubbing in your plumping powder, tie your hair in a low ponytail, pushing the hair up at the back slightly to create a bump at the back and top of the head. If you’ve used a product like the Powder Styler then this added volume and bump will stay in place.
Roll the hair in the ponytail back on itself and secure with hair grips/bobby pins. If you have long hair this will look quite full so you’ll need more grips to hold it in place but if you have fine hair then you can pull out the style to add more volume. For a sleek chignon style, leave the hair as it is but if you want it to be messy like mine then pull it out more and more until you create your desired look.
Then go back to the front section of hair that you clipped/tied to the side earlier. Divide the hair in two, creating a centre parting. Then leave out some hair right at the front, about a centimetre or two wide.
Scrape the hair either side of the head back towards the bun and wrap the hair around the hair bobble that you used to tie the pony tail and pin into place with hair grips. Then either curl the front sections of hair, wave/twist them or leave them as the are. Back comb them slightly at the root if you want a little extra bounce in this area.
Then set everything in place with a light spritz of a very firm hold hairspray.
When I want to make sure that my hair stays in place and doesn’t move, I use the Fudge Urban Iced Coconut Cocktail Hairspray. Aside from smelling absolutely delicious, this hairspray has such incredible hold. The hairspray itself is very concentrated when it comes out so I prefer to spray it in short, bursts concentrating on specific areas rather than a long, continuous spray. It feels a little wet for a few seconds and then it sets in place and my hair doesn’t move at all.
There are other ways that this hairspray can be used, particularly if you want to create lots of volume in your hair. If I’m wearing my hair down but I want it to be big and bouncy, I straighten my hair first, then I tip my head upside down, spray this hairspray into the roots and then blast my hair with the hair dryer with the nozzle pointing downwards. Then I flip my hair back over and position it in place and then spritz my fringe in place.
I love the volume that this hairspray can create in my hair and the superb hold it gives. I’d really recommend it!
Whether you have wavy, curly or straight hair, you can create this look. In the above photos, I created it on hair that was already wavy and so the front sections already had a kink in them. In contrast, the below photo was taken when my hair was freshly washed. As you can see, my hair looks a lot softer and I curled the front sections of my hair rather than leaving them to their own wavy devices!
You can shop the Fudge Urban Powder Styler* here and the Fudge Urban Iced Coconut Cocktail Hairspray* here. There’s a 3 for 2 offer on at the moment so I’d really recommend pick up the Crisp Pear and Sweet Vanilla Dry Shampoo (review here) too.
