How to budget on your favourite hobbies

Do you have a hobby that you absolutely love but struggle to fund? Have you had to reconsider your hobby because of financial issues?

If so, there are some ways that you can continue to enjoy your favourite activities without hurting your finances.

Hobbies can be expensive, but I’ve got some budget tips that will help you keep on top of your spendings. Read on to find out what these are!

Budget tips for your favourite hobbies

Here are some of my top budget tips for each popular hobby. These tips will help you make the most out of your favourite activities without breaking the bank!

Cooking

Do you love cooking and trying out new recipes? There are several ways you can continue to make new dishes on a micro-budget. One of the best budget tips is to look for sales and discounts at your local supermarket. Most supermarkets have regular promotions on a wide variety of products.

Cooking with these products can be a fun and interesting cooking challenge for you and your loved ones. You can come up with some great and original recipes! For the best sales and discounts, I recommend going to an affordable supermarket like Aldi, Lidl or Tesco. Here is a list of the most affordable supermarkets in the UK.

Another budget tip is to look for products that are about to expire. Most supermarkets reduce the price of products that are about to go bad.

My last budget tip is to use apps like Too Good To Go.

Too Good To Go is a surplus food marketplace app that connects customers to local food venues (e.g. supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, cafés…). The goal of the app is to reduce food waste by encouraging providers to sell their surplus food at a discounted price instead of throwing it out. Too Good To Go is a very popular and successful app with stellar reviews. It has won many prestigious awards including the 2023 Cultural Impact Award at Apple’s App Store Awards. I recommend using it if you want cheaper take-away or ingredients. Food bundles sold on the app will vary from day to day. You will get whatever is left over at local food venues at the end of the day. That being said, the vast majority of food bundles are delicious and offer excellent value for money.

Gaming

Gaming is one of the most popular hobbies in the world, but it can be very expensive. New games are always released on the market. Some of them are free but most of them include at least a few in-app purchases.

My best budget tip is to look for free games, free trials, great discounts

and welcome offers. Bonuses and promotions are popular for most gaming niches, but they are well known in the gambling industry. Bonuses are offered by many casinos, there are many different varieties that casinos have on offer, including welcome bonus, no deposit bonus and loyalty bonus.

You can also split the costs of purchasing a new game with some friends. Each time someone finishes the game, they reset it and pass it on to the next person. That way you still get to play the game but at a lower price. You can sell it once you finish it and use those funds to purchase a new game.

Gardening

If gardening is your absolute fave, try borrowing gardening tools from family members, neighbours or friends instead of buying them yourselves. You can also ask your neighbours to chip in for some communal gardening gear. Those who chip in get to use it as well so it’s a win-win situation. After all, tidy and well-maintained gardens benefit the entire neighbourhood.

You can also get free plants and vegetable seeds from several groups and organizations including from WWF, the Wildlife Trusts and some local councils. This can help reduce the cost of gardening.

Hanging out with friends

If you are always hanging out with your friends at an expensive coffee shop, restaurant or bar, the costs will add up. Instead, opt for some free or low-cost activities. A recent trend is the at-home café experience. The concept is simple, you just recreate a café at your place. You can design your own café’s logo and menu.

If you don’t have the time to plan everything, ask your friends to help you and to bring some pastries. This type of activity creates lasting memories and is more budget-friendly than a normal café.

You can also go:

• for a picnic in a park

• for a walk in a new neighbourhood

• to a free museum or a free event in your city (e.g. free movie nights)

• organize a movie night at home

Additional tips and final thoughts

To conclude, no matter what your hobby is, you can reduce your costs by:

• looking for discounts, promotions and welcome offers

• looking for freebies

• splitting the costs with other people

• borrowing instead of buying

• choosing low-cost activities when possible
