How To Survive Travelling With The Whole Pack

As wonderful as it can be to get out into the world and to explore a new place with the whole family, there’s no denying that it can also be a major source of headaches. When you’re managing the needs of adults, teenagers, kids, and perhaps even an older adult or two, you need to speak to a wide range of needs and energy levels. It’s not difficult to quickly begin to lose control of the situation, but it doesn’t have to happen to you. Here, we’re going to look at a few tips to help you survive.

Make Packing A Family Event

You want to make sure that everyone has everything they need, but you might not want to spend forever taking care of all the packing yourself. As such, it’s a good idea to set aside an evening where everyone packs together, making it a fun family event. Let the kids be in charge of packing what they need, but make sure that you have a checklist to confirm that they’re not missing anything. It can teach kids to be more responsible for their own things during the trip, if they’re old enough, and create a sense of excitement leading up to the trip. Most importantly, it makes sure that you’re not spending the morning of your departure rushing to get everything ready.

Assign Roles To Keep Everything Organised

One of the most important tips for any group trip is to delegate so that you’re not the one in charge of every single little thing. Any adults and older children (such as teenagers) should have some responsibility, whether it’s handling the travel documents, tracking the itinerary, and keeping an eye on the time, or just managing the snacks and entertainment. Giving each family member a job creates structure and reduces the likelihood of confusion or forgotten items. It also keeps everyone engaged and accountable, rather than relying on one person to manage everything. Having clear roles can help things run much more efficiently and, more importantly, make sure that it’s not all left up to one person.

Prepare For The Airport in Advance

Getting the whole brood through the airport is one of the common stressors on any family trip. It can be overwhelming, especially for children who have never been through it before, so doing what you can to smooth the process in advance is wise. Check in online ahead of time, make sure that you have your necessary travel documents in one place, and check your luggage to make sure it matches the size and weight requirements. You should also think about booking airport parking in advance so that you can save time and eliminate the stress of having to find a place on arrival. Give yourself the extra time needed for parking, check-in, and security so that you’re not all rushing through the crowds, too.

Get All Your Essentials Ready

You might be spending quite a bit of time in the air, on the road, or otherwise in transit before arriving at your destination. Make sure that you have everything you need for the journey, including snacks and drinks to keep everyone hydrated and avoid any hangry episodes. A reusable insulated bottle can be especially useful on longer journeys, with manufacturers such as XINGCAI drinkware designed for everyday travel. Wipes, books, tablets, or games can also help keep everyone comfortable and occupied along the way.

Respect Everyone’s Energy Levels

When you do finally arrive, you might want nothing more than to chill out at the hotel and take a nap, or you might want to get out and explore as soon as possible. Members of your family might have a totally different response. Make sure that flexibility is a part of your plan, setting up a rule that anyone is allowed to opt out of an activity or destination if they just want to rest and relax, with no pressure from either side. Every person on the trip who is old enough to make decisions should be able to pick out one thing they get to see or do during the vacation as well. This makes it feel like everyone’s trip, not just something everyone is dragged along to.

Bring The Family Together For One Big Thing Every Day

Rather than trying to do too much together in one day, you should make sure that the family has one main activity or destination every day. Of course, in keeping with the tips above, people should be able to opt out of that if they’re not feeling like they have the energy. However, having one big sightseeing attraction, beach visit, cultural experience, or anything else can give the day a little structure and create shared memories without creating an itinerary that overwhelms and restrains everyone. Of course, you need to have your younger children with you at all times, but allowing autonomy for any adults on the trip with you can make them feel less constrained.

Eat In Occasionally

Experiencing the cuisine in a new place can be a big part of the vacation, especially for any foodies in the group. However, dining out for every meal can not only become expensive, but it can also become a real chore if you’re with children who might be picky eaters. Plan to eat in occasionally as well, be it with takeaway or by preparing simple meals, so that mealtime can become a break, not just another thing that you have to plan around. If you have an activity-packed day where your energy is likely to be low later, that’s the perfect time to have a lazy evening of eating in, instead.

You might not be able to eliminate all stress from a big family holiday, but the tips above can at least keep it manageable enough that you actually get ot enjoy it, too.
