If there is one thing we are all agreed on it is this – we all
need a good night’s sleep in order to perform at our best. For years and years, I’ve burnt the candle at both ends. I’ve had plenty of early mornings, far too many late nights and quite frankly, my sleep pattern is all over the place. In 2016, I aim to get into a proper bedtime routine, have enough quality sleep and be comfortable while I’m in bed.
Unfortunately, like me, many
are unable to achieve a state of night-time utopia and one of the main reasons for
this is because their bed is worn out.
When you can’t sleep, or you wake up tired and exhausted it is
tempting to try and pin the blame on lots of other things; the kids, the job,
the weather! But the simple fact is that you may just need a new bed. For me, its a neck injury that causes me to be so uncomfortable and I often wake up in pain. I’ve got a great pillow that really helps me but now that I’ve had my existing bed for years and years, a new bed and mattress would really help me too.
To help you to on your quest to get a perfect nights sleep, I have put together a checklist to help you to decide if its a new bed that you need.
1. You wake up with aches and pains!
If you wake up feeling achy and stiff and find yourself having to
really stretch everything out before you can even move this could be a sign
that your mattress has become saggy and uneven as you start to sink in places
where you need more support. You may find that you have pins and needles in
your limbs due to the pressure from an unsupportive mattress. If turning your
mattress still gives the same results then this means the mattress has lost its
supporting qualities. Sealy beds offer a good range of orthopaedic options for those who suffer
from back or joint pains. However this is not the only option. Memory foam
beds, for example often give a similar range of support to aching joints. Try
different ones before you buy.
2. You wake up sneezing!
It has been said that over time a mattress can almost double in
size due to the weight of discarded skin cells and dust mites! True or not, and
no matter how hygiene-conscious you are, it is a fact that your bed and
mattress will accumulate a fair number of these microscopic creatures which are
invisible to the naked eye. Many people are completely unaffected by dust mites
but those who are prone to allergies may find themselves sneezing and wheezing
on awakening. If this is the case for you it may be time to think about a new

If you find yourself waking during the night, this could be a sign
that your bed just is no longer comfortable. And unfortunately frequent
night-time waking leads to excessive daytime tiredness. If you are tossing and
turning during the night it could mean that your mattress is worn out or it
might simply not be the right one for you. Reputable bed providers can offer
advice on which is the best type of bed for your particular style of sleeping
in order to give you the best possible sleep experience. If you find yourself
nodding off on the bus going into work, or even worse nodding off at work, it
may be time to talk to the professionals about a new bed!
4. Check the appearance of your old bed
A simple way to help you decide whether you need a new bed or not
is simply to take a good look at the old one. Take off all the bedding and
check for obvious sags and impressions in the mattress and the bed base. Sit or
lie on the bed and bounce around a little. If you can hear squeaks and creaks
then this will tell you that the structure of the bed is worn out.
