My Top 5 Tips to Weather Proof Your Pout

Unlike the rest of your skin, the lips don’t produce any of their own natural oils which is why they can become super dry and chapped during the cold winter months.  Its important to look after your lips all year round but especially at this time of the year.  Whether you’re someone who regularly keeps their kisser in check or if you’ve been lacking in the lips department, I’m going to share with you my top tips on how to weather proof your pout this winter.

Top Tip #1: Exfoliate Your Lips

Moisturising is often regarded as the key to having hydrated lips but if you want them to be kissably soft then you’ll need to exfoliate them too.

Lush Bubblegum Lip Scrub*

My first top tip is to keep your lips exfoliated and if you’re wondering how to exfoliate your lips, then take note: take a towelling wash cloth and place it under the hot tap, ring it out and then gently press it into your lips to warm them up.  Next, take a scoop of Lush’s Bubblegum Lip Scrub  (buy here) and slough away the dead skin from your lips until your heart is content before removing it with a hot face cloth again.  Doing this will leave your lips super smooth, ready for a hit of moisture with a balm or a slick of colour from a lipstick.

Top Tip #2: Moisturise Lips Morning and Night

Everyday, I give my lips some intense hydration with a really good lip balm like those from the Body Shop and Chapstickthat I’ve talked about in this post and this post respectively.  However in recent weeks I’ve switched to the Blistex Intensive Moisturiser and I am very surprised and pleased with how soft it has made my lips.

Blistex Intensive Moisturiser*

I say that I am surprised as I had heard a few YouTubers talking about this lip product over the years and whilst their reviews were positive, they did say that it is best reserved for night time use as it is very white and casts a white cast over the lips and this was something that put me off using it.  However now that I have tried it for myself, I can report that whilst the product itself comes out of the tube an opaque shade of white, when applied to the lips, it sinks in and becomes clear- so if, like me, you had thought to reserve its use for night times only then I would seriously reconsider as this stuff is good.

I’ve been applying the Blistex Intensive Moisturiser (buy here) each morning just after I’ve brushed my teeth to give it enough time to sink in before applying my lippy.  It feels cooling and tingles slightly to give the lips an invigorating boost- it feels so refreshing, especially first thing on a morning!.  Only a little bit is needed to cover the full lips and whilst feel moisturised instantly, they don’t feel as though they have a film on them that is doing nothing, case in point: Vaseline.

This moisturiser contains aloe vera, shea butter and olive oil which all work together to condition the skin and to help the lips to maintain and retain their moisture, which is exactly what they need during the cold and windy weather.  There’s also camphor in their too to soothe the skin on the lips, as well as palm oil, allantoin and SPF 10 which protect the lips from the elements.

Regardless of which brand you opt for, it’s important to remember to moisturise your lips daily and that doesn’t just mean each morning, that’s every night too.  My favourite night time lip balm is the Blistex Moisture Max (review here).

Blistex Moisture Max*

I’ve talked about this lip balm at length on my blog before as I love it and have repurchased it countless times.  MoistureMax  is a thick, silky  smooth moisturiser that contains small blue beads of melting moisture that contain shea butter for softness, aloe vera for its soothing qualities and SPF 15 to protect the lips.

I apply this as the last step in my skincare routine, just before I go to bed and I wake up with super soft lips every time.  I cannot recommend it enough.

Top Tip #3: Pop on a Bold Lippy

When the weather is dreary outside, pop on a bold lippy like the Collection DeLuxe Lipstick in Prohibition to awaken add some colour to your lips and make them pop when you might not feel like it inside!

I can’t believe I lived all of those years avoiding red lipstick until I tried the Kiko red lip stain in this post and loved the look.  Now, I can’t get enough of reds and this one is quickly becoming one of my favourites; especially when worn with a matte light face and winged eyeliner.

The Collection Deluxe Lipstick in Prohibition is a gorgeous deep red berry shade that is very slick and balm like on the lips with an intense colour, I love it!

Top Tip #4: Treat Sore Lips Immediately

My next top tip is to treat sore lips straight away.  This will help to soothe and heal them and prevent any further damage.

Blistex Relief Cream*

The Blistex Relief Cream (buy here) is the perfect antidote to chapped and cracked lips.  Apply this at the first sign of cracking and it relieves the lips immediately, soothing the lips over night and removing the painful cracks within a matter of days.  It contains peppermint oil and camphor which have a tingling and cooling effect on sore lips which soothes them and calms them down when they’re feeling irritated.  To condition the lips, it contains eucalyptus oil and lanolin which also help to restore the lips back to being soft and smooth.

The cold weather is undoubtedly a key trigger for nasty cold sores and if you’re a sufferer then you’ll know how much of a pain these can be.  Mr WLL is a victim of them every winter and he swears by the Blistex Cold Sore Cream (buy here) that I blogged about in my Winter Lip Therapy post.  Simply pop on at the first tingle and it can help to stop the cold sore from rearing its ugly head.

Top Tip #5: Develop a Routine and Stick to It

My last top tip is to develop a lip care routine and stick to it.  There’s no point in buying products to keep your lips soft and supple and then not using them frequently enough for them to be effective.  I exfoliate my lips once per week, usually on a Friday night as I prepare for the weekend, moisturise morning and night and treat any problems as they arise to nip them in the bud early.
