New Sports for You and Your Family to Try

Looking for a new opportunity to bond as a family? Maybe you want to get active and explore the outdoors while you’re at it? You’re certainly not alone in that desire. New studies found that two in five children want to be more active so don’t be afraid to peel them away from their devices indoors and get some welly boots on them.

Trying out a new sport together can be a rewarding experience for both adults and kids. There is a wide range of activities suited to all ages and skill levels, from water-based sports to classic family favourites. Here are four great options to consider:

Dinghy Sailing

Dinghy sailing offers families a thrilling way to experience the water, and it’s accessible whether you’re in the UK or embarking on family active holidays abroad. Sailing a small boat can be both exhilarating and educational, allowing families to work as a team and learn essential navigation skills.

Many UK sailing clubs and schools provide introductory lessons that are tailored to beginners of all ages, ensuring that families can dive into the sport in a relaxed environment. Holiday providers will offer children the opportunity to complete their RYA stages learning a wide range of sailing skills that will allow them to sail at a club upon completion. Adults will be able to undertake their levels 1-3. These courses have a great balance of water and land-based teaching to ensure students go home with a thorough understanding of dinghy sailing.

Paddleboarding

The simplicity and accessibility of paddleboarding have made it a favourite amongst families in the UK. It doesn’t require intense training and with the right gear (and a little guidance), anyone can get started. The sport offers a unique way to explore lakes, rivers and coastlines while working on balance and core strength.

Many sporting goods shops offer beginner-friendly paddleboards and there are plenty of amazing paddleboarding locations across the UK that provide rentals and basic lessons.

Tennis

Tennis is a timeless favourite – it’s fun, competitive and, best of all, it’s easy to pick up at any age. Courts are widely available in parks and sports centres across the country and many local clubs offer lessons for all ages and skill ranges.

This sport is a wonderful way to build fitness, coordination and agility, and it encourages some friendly competition between family members. Doubles matches are the perfect format for family play, offering a mix of teamwork and strategy.

Archery

This different and challenging sport is an excellent choice for family bonding. Learning to shoot with a bow and arrow helps focus, patience and determination, making it both mentally and physically stimulating.

You’ll find classes set up at nearby sports clubs and specialised archery venues that guarantee your family can learn to participate safely.
