Happy New Year everyone!
I wanted to pop online today with a quick post to wish you all a very happy new year and all of the best wishes for the year ahead. I’m sure you’ve all got far better things to be doing with your time today than reading this; perhaps you’ve got a sore head after last nights celebrations so you’re in need of a generous brunch and a nap, or perhaps you’re heading out to visit family. But I did want to leave you with a little bit of food for thought anyway.
With it being the first day of a brand new year, I know that there will be a lot of talk online about changing. Especially with the influence of the media who push us all towards spending lots and eating and drinking in abundance and much more in the run up to the festive season and then shame us into wanting to dramatically change ourselves and our lives come 1st of January.
The New Year, New Me mentality seems as though it has been around since the dawn of time. Every year, millions of people make all of these resolutions in a bid to dramatically change themselves. In reality, these New Years Resolutions seem to be a tick list for the things that they are going to fail at within the first week of January. Some barely make it past the first day; who really wants to be eating a salad the day after they’ve tried every cocktail on the menu at their NYE party?
I do feel as though the New Year, New Me attitude can be quite damaging. In a lot of ways, it sets people up for a fall because they set themselves these unrealistic, unachievable that they don’t full believe in and when they don’t achieve them, it can be a pretty big knock to the confidence levels of some. I also think that the idea of completely changing ourselves can be quite disheartening too. Why do we feel the need to change? What is wrong with ourselves just as we are?
However there is a part of me that believes that the New Year, New Me attitude isn’t necessarily a bad thing, provided it is done in the right way. I’d call the new year more of a chance to upgrade something about yourself or your life, if thats what you want to do. Perhaps a New Year, Improved Me? Improved suggests moving forward and gives a sense of stewardship, of leaving things better than they once were.
I’m a big believer in being the best version of yourself possible. The best version of you that you want to be, not what anyone else wants you to be. Be yourself, be proud of who you are, think positively and celebrate your achievements.
I tend to find that when people are genuinely happy in themselves, they’re at their prettiest and I’m a big believer that when you’re happy now, you’re in the best mindset to be able to decide what you really want, set goals and achieve your dreams.
Theres nothing wrong with wanting to change something about yourself but see it as more of an improvement, something positive that you’re working towards. Remember that there is only one YOU in the world and you’re completely and utterly unique.
If there’s something that you would like to work towards in 2016 then set realistic goals, perhaps in bitesized chunks, stay focused and work your hardest towards them and smash them. Remember that what every it is that you want to do this year, be it to learn an instrument, save money, lose weight or whatever, it isn’t going to happen overnight and you need to be committed to your goals in order to see the improvement. Think of it as making improvements towards an upgraded you.
That being said, if there’s nothing about yourself or your lifestyle that you’d like to improve, then theres nothing wrong with that either. For me personally, I’m someone who is very content and happy with her life but I like to feel successful and like to always set myself something to work towards. That’s not for everyone though.
You need to live your life and your 2016 for you. If you’re able to do that this year, I promise you, you’ll feel a fantastic sense of achievement.
