WhatLauraWore: Big Girls CAN Wear Stripes

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone says that you can’t wear something, especially when its because of your size.  Yes, perhaps there will always be things that will look ‘better’ on one shape or size than another but that doesn’t mean that you can’t wear something.  Why wait until you’re a particular size to wear something?  Why spend your days wishing you’d worn something when you could just wear it?  Some things you can’t change about yourself but you can make a conscious decision to change your opinion to not be so judgemental of yourself and others, particularly when it comes to fashion.

For example, my friend is 5ft 2″ and wont wear maxi dresses because someone told her that ‘short people don’t wear long dresses, you’ll look silly’ and that they would swamp her and she’d look even shorter.  When really, she’d be very comfortable in a maxi, they suit her lifestyle, would keep her cool in the summer and she’d look absolutely gorgeous in a maxi, yet she wouldn’t wear one.  Then one day, we were out shopping and after several shops worth of moans about not being able to wear something, I finally convinced her to just go into the changing room and try one on.

Guess what? She looked incredible.  Yes, it needed taking up a few inches but she looked fabulous.  The piece she’d opted for was in the most beautiful colour and had a empire line which helped to elongate her shape and the dress suited her shape, style and colouring perfectly.  I could tell how fabulous she felt inside just by looking at the expression on her face and afterwards she told me about how gutted she was that she’d spent years not wearing something just because of other peoples opinions.

One of the most restricting things in life is the opinion of others and they can often really change how you feel about yourself and what you wear but I really want to tell you all to wear WHATEVER you want.

For me, I’m a big believer in dressing for your shape, loving the skin you’re in and making the most of yourself.  But the most important thing is to enjoy fashion and to wear what you want to.  Life is too short.  Whatever your shape, size or height, you can rock any style, you just have to find the piece that suits you within that trend or that you like the most and if there’s something you want to wear that you don’t particularly think suits you; if you want to wear it, GO FOR IT.

The ONLY opinion that matters is YOURS.

I often hear that big girls with my shape shouldn’t wear horizontal stripes so I guess you could say that I’m breaking that code with this outfit but do you know what, I wore this dress and felt great in it.

The Yours Clothing Block Stripe Skater Dress has been loved by so many plus size girlies and for a while I thought ah, I love it but it’ll not suit me.  Then one day, I saw the coral and black colour way and thought sod it.

This was the result.

I love this dress.  Coral is my favourite colour, I love the way that it looks against the black in this dress.  I love getting my legs out in shorter dresses as they’re probably my favourite part of my body and I love the split at the neckline.  Yes, the horizontal stripes don’t hit me at the most flattering part of my body but I really don’t care, I love this dress and the way that it makes me feel!

I hope you all go out there and wear whatever you feel your best in. Fashion is for enjoying and life is for living!

P.S. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while then you might recognise my shoes and earrings as being the ones that I wore for the press launch of my dress with Simply Be!

Beautiful! My biggest peeve was growing up with ginger hair, my Mum always told me I couldn't wear red or pink (nothing worse than being a little girl who can't wear pink!) .. I know that's rubbish now! I wear red all the time! x

I was so bad for not wearing things as I was told too I shouldn't, the most I've been told is not to wear horizontal striped tops, dresses ect as they'd make me look fatter. I've purchased striped tops since & actually really like them on me. Also I'm quite short too like your friend so don't wear maxi dresses but will definitely try one now 🙂 it's a gorgeous dress & you rock it beautifullyxx
