Everyone has down days. Even the most seemingly happy people have days where they don’t want to get out of bed and want the sunshine hours to pass by unnoticed. But that does not mean every day has to be that way. It is perfectly natural to have highs and lows, but what you want is to outweigh the lows with highs, and there are many ways you can do this. Here are a few simple hacks to build your happiness:
Get off social media
Stop staring at your phone and look up. There is nothing worse for your mental health than constantly comparing your life to the highlights of other peoples. Your world is around you not on a screen so spend more time concentrating on you and the people who are in the real world, rather than getting annoyed about some silly comment.
Go for a walk
Getting out and about, moving, and changing your scenery is a great way to build happiness. If you walk down the streets you don’t normally walk down your are exposed to new stimuli. You will think of different thoughts and have new ideas. If there is a park or a forest nearby, take a stroll there. Being around plants and animals is a natural high.
Chin up and smile
Forcing a smile even in a stressful situation can actually lift your mood, reduce your stress levels and actually make you feel happier. It even has the ability to improve your immune system and make you live longer. Who would’ve thought? Even a fake smile can help. It is also an act of strength and defiance so go for it, smile.
Laugh as much as you can
Smiling, laughing, there is a pattern here! Laughing is also great way to reduce stress, regulate blood pressure, and boost the immune system. Studies have found it can add eight years on to your life. So, therefore, it is actually a form of medication. It is also a great way to bond with other people. If you have a similar sense of humour, you will be friends for life.
Having a regular seven to eight hours of sleep a night is essential for your happiness. If you sleep well, you will have a heightened sense of wellbeing. You have to rest. When you sleep, the body repairs the damage that has been done during the day, and it changes short term memories into long term memories. If you struggle to sleep, ensure you don’t have any stimulants too late, like tea or coffee, or cigarettes. Also avoid alcohol. How about a new blanket, you should see how to choose a weighted blanket which can help you sleep more peacefully.
Houseplants are a great way to add happiness into the home. They actually give off an anti-stress hormone, so they change the chemical balance in your brain to make you less anxious and stressed. They also detoxify the air, by breathing in CO2 and out nice clean, fresh air.
