Over the last couple of months, I’ve been trying out some makeup from top beauty brand, Stila*.
I didn’t know what to expect as I haven’t tried anything from this brand before, aside from the Stay All Day Vinyl Lipgloss that I reviewed here, but after thoroughly road testing the products, I’m seriously impressed.
I can’t honestly say that there’s one stand out from the bunch because they’re all pretty much fabulous.
Let me start by telling you all about the Stila Stay All Day 10 in 1 HD Beauty Balm which I’m actually wearing here with nothing else on base wise; no foundation, concealer, powder, nothing, nada!
This balm is essentially a primer for the skin that helps to improve its feel and appearance which in turn, creates an incredible base for makeup as well as making the skin look flawless and youthful. It does have a bit of a funny scent but that doesn’t translate onto the skin at all.
I was expecting it to be quite heavy and to remain sticky on the skin but it doesn’t at all. It comes out as a thick balmy cream but as you start to smooth it onto the skin (I find using my fingers works best for this), it blends in effortlessly and leaves a silky, semi matte finish.
The idea is that you apply it to your skin and then follow up with your foundation or tinted moisturiser of choice for the ultimate perfect complexion. I was wearing it underneath my foundation and other base products in this post and I love the smooth, perfected base that it gives my skin, ready for foundation.
I find that my makeup applies and blends more effortlessly when I apply it on top of this and it actually helps my makeup to stay on longer which is quite an achievement given that my skin is so oily. This balm is oil free and it does have a high-definition formula that helps to reduce the appearance of pore size while providing oil and blemish control and while I don’t tend to get spots so I can’t attest to the blemish side of things, I would definitely say that it controls the oil on my super oily skin!
However I also find that this beauty balm works very well on its own as you can see in the photo above. Using it in this way, makes it more of a skin perfector than relying on it for coverage.
The balm contains micro spheres which are design to help to hide skin imperfections and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. I do think that it has a blurring effect on the skin, especially on my cheeks where I have enlarged pores and I do find that it helps to counteract the redness in my skin, leaving it with a more even appearance.
The one product out of the bunch that pleasantly surprised me was the Stila Convertible Colour in Rose.
This is a cream product that can be used on the cheeks, lips, or both. The colour payoff is light and buildable so you can choose whether you would like a light wash of colour or a more pigmented pop of colour.
It comes in a compact with a mirror in the lid which makes it great for use on the go; although if you’re wearing this on your lips, you might want to consider carrying a lip brush with you too as swiping your finger in the compact can get messy.
The great thing about this product is that it works equally as well on the lips as it does on the cheeks. Generally I find that with products like this, you either get one or the other in that it either performs well on the lips but is too creamy on the cheeks or it is just right for the cheeks but too drying on the lips. With this product, Stila have got the formula just right. Plus, it is long lasting too which means that it doesn’t slide off my oily cheeks or bleed on my lips.
The next piece that I have been trying out was a no brainer for me. The Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner in Gilded is the most gorgeous bronze/gold eyeliner thats perfect for using as part of a golden makeup look during the warmer months and it would be ideal to add to a smokey eye for a Christmas party look too.
It is very soft which makes it easy to blend however I did find the tip to crumble slightly so you do need to use this with a light hand.
The colour pay off is incredible and the metallic finish glistens on the eyes. It doesn’t fade or smudge once it has dried down and I’ve found that it lasts all day, or night, until you take it off. I like using my Clarins Instant Eye Makeup Remover for this as by the time I come to take my makeup off, I want the removal to be super quick so that I can get into bed for a well earned rest!
The final two products that I’ve been trying from Stila go hand in hand with one another to create bold, voluminous lashes.
The Stila Lash Stunner Extreme Lash Primer contains two different types of fibres (spherical and straight) within a creamy mascara type product that aim to lengthen and thicken your natural lashes.
Lash primers and duo products that aim to achieve a similar look to this have been really popular over the last year but the trouble with them is that there tends to be a lot of fall out from the lash fibres which can irritate the eyes, or drop down onto the face which doesn’t look great. Since the fibres in this primer are set within a creamy formula, they don’t do that, so you can apply it and build it up until your hearts content.
The primer is tinted a neutral brown shade which looks very natural and it is easy too apply too; straight from a mascara style wand that gives you plenty of control. The formula is buildable so you can really apply as much or as little as you like to achieve the desired amount of volume in your lashes. It has been clinically validated to show that it can increase the weight of the lashes by 81% and their diameter by 40%. As you can see from the photos in this post, after only one light application, plus the mascara, my lashes do certainly pack more of a punch than they usually do!
After applying the lash primer, you then apply the Stila HUGE Extreme Lash Mascara which is in a super black shade. I have short and straight lashes so this mascara has a lot of work to do but I’m pleased to report that it works superbly whether used alone or other the top of the primer for more dramatic volume. If you’re into a slightly clumpier, spider lash look then you’ll love the effect of using the two of these together. If you prefer a smoother look then I’d suggest opting for the mascara on its own.
Considering the wand is really big, this mascara is very easy to apply to the top and bottom lashes without catching it on the skin. It leaves my lashes looking blacker than black and gives them plenty of length and curl.
I love the use of these two products together because I think that they’re so effective and perfect for when I’m wanting a bold lash look but don’t have the time or inclination to apply false lashes.
I’m going on holiday soon and these are going to be the mascara products that I take away with me. I usually have eyelash extensions applied before I travel but its a costly habit and I’m really trying to reign in my spending at the moment so that I can buy a house later this year. I think that using this duo while on holiday will be ideal as it’ll give me the look of thicker, more volumised lashes without having to rely on actually having to apply volumising false lashes.
What Stila makeup products would you recommend? What would you like to try?
