WhatLauraWore: Alnwick Garden Day Out in Floral Boohoo

Living in the North East really does have its perks in that we have a beautiful stretch of coast but we also have the gorgeous countryside right on our doorstep.  There is so much to do up here and I really feel that the North East doesn’t get spoken about enough in terms of being a place to visit and enjoy.  There are some real gems around here and I’m going to start sharing some of them with you.  Starting with Alnwick Garden in Northumberland.

Now if you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ve probably heard of Alnwick Garden as it is actually the grounds of Alnwick Castle which featured as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films.  Remember Harry’s first flying lesson?  Well that was filmed at Alnwick Castle as well as countless other films and TV programmes.  Upon looking at the castle and the gardens, it is very easy to see why they’re so popular as the setting serves as a stunning backdrop.

Alnwick Garden is quoted as being the ‘worlds most extraordinary contemporary garden’ but personally, I find it enchanting.  When entering the gardens, you’re surrounded by pristine art that will capture the minds of those both young and old.  There’s the rose garden, the maze, a cherry orchard and even a poison garden where deadly plants lie along with a guided tour where you can uncover myths and legends.

My favourite however is the Grand Cascade which is a tumbling mass of water that forms the centrepiece of Alnwick Garden.  It overlooks a grassed lawn that is perfect for taking a picnic to enjoy or listening to music that is often played there on themed days.  Every hour and half an hour the water shoots high into the air and you can run underneath it, hoping to get splashed on a hot day or simply sit and enjoy the view like I have; it is pretty refreshing.

Another of my favourite areas has to be the Serpentine Garden which features a topiary serpent that snakes its way around a section of the garden with artistic water sculptures created by one of the worlds finest in the field, William Pye.  Whether you’re 5, 25 like me or 65, you’ll love exploring the wonders that Alnwick Gardens has to offer and it is definitely worth a trip to the area for all of the family as it is very easy to navigate and walk around with plenty of seating available if you need to rest your legs.

If you’re looking for a day out that all of the family can enjoy then I couldn’t recommend Alnwick Garden more highly.  Whether you take a picnic along or dine in one of the restaurants they have there, you are sure to spend the full day there enjoying yourself, especially if the sun is out.  As you’re leaving, I would highly recommend checking out The Treehouse which is one of the largest in the world, complete with rope bridges and tree top walk ways to really bring out the child in you.  The entry fee may seem a little steep but when you see all of the sheer hard work and determination that goes into the gardens then you’ll know that the money you pay to get in is absolutely worth it.

The day we visited Alnwick Gardens, the sun was in the sky but it wasn’t overly hot so I decided to wear a couple of light layers in case it warmed up.  The outfit I put together features the gorgeous Sophie Floral Boxy Jacket from the boohoo plus size range that I featured several times on my Instagram page.  Lots of you emailed to tell me you’d purchased the pieces I picked out and I’m so happy to hear that you liked them.  This jacket is one of my favourites in my wardrobe because it provides a gorgeous pop of colour to my summer wardrobe.  I love to layer it over basics, particularly white or black so that the bright colours in the jacket become a focal point for the outfit.  The light weight, slightly structured shape makes this piece great when worn at night as well as during the day and I am sure I will get lots more wear out of it now that I’m home from my honeymoon and not in 30 odd degree heat!  I’m actually looking forward to wearing it over a summer dress as I think that will look really cute.

I’ve paired my boohoo jacket with a plain black cami from Evans and my trusty denim knitted leggings from New Look.  With a jacket as vibrant and multi-coloured as this, when choosing accessories it is best to pick out one colour from the piece and pair accessories with the outfit in that colour.  My colour choice?  Coral, of course!

I love this post and the candid shots of you in it. I especially love the sitting down photo as not a lot of us bloggers tend to do the sitting down shots for fear of looking 'unflattering'. Well balls to that, so well done. That jacket is a beaut! x x
